My first bike when I was 18 was a 90 zx6r. paid 800 for it and figured that I'd ride it till it dies then leave it where it lies. It was good for me so I could get used to riding. I would suggest a 600, nothing bigger and I wouldn't spend a lot of money on your first bike.

Well I think a CBR would be your best bet as far as ground to seat height. But at your height you will still have a little trouble on any bike. But there are measures you can take to get it to fit you a little better and this can also be done without affecting handling. I would suggest going and sitting on a few bikes and check out how hard it is for you in stock form. But really just get what feels comfortable.

f4i's are on average between 5000 and 7000 dollars.
Also, if they bike seat is still to high, look into lowering links (aka dogbones).

wouldn't that affect the handling/riding characteristics of the bike? i just want to find a bike in stock form and leave it that way to ride.

A friend of mine just got the new 600RR, not for looks or performance, and DEFINATELY not for the seat, but because the seat is lower so she can get two feet down at a stop instead of just one. Yes, it's more expensive, but just a heads up.

I honestly don't know... she's a good number of inches shorter than me, and I'm 5'10"
