I got a 89 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 2.8 V6. The transmission went out and I am trying to pull it out according to Chilton's manual but it is not working. It drops down some but won't come out. I have a tranmission jack under it currently. Is there a certain way to raise or lower the back of the engine, twist/roll the transmission in order to get it to drop out? Please let me know, as I am super frustrated currently. If I get past this, I got a few other problems with this car that I could use help with but first things first. thanks everyone!

Did you loosen all the tranny mounts? Did you took out inner and outer terminals?
Because if the tranny is not connected to the engine and all its mounts are loose you are supposed to be able to remove it from the car

everything is disconnected and the tranny is completely separated from the engine. the problem appears to really limited or no room to work. there is a cover on the transmission (on the drivers side of the car) that hangs out over the frame of the car. the tranny rests on it when trying to drop it out. I already took off a big bracket trying to get more room to work. I have tried to rotate the tranny clockwise to gain more room but still nothing. I tryed to pull the side cover to gain more room but could not get enough room to remove it either. should I have just left it together and pulled the engine and tranny as a unit? I have never had problems like this before pulling anything. the book made it sound like it would basically drop right out but no deal. thanks for the reply! all help is appreciated more than you can know. hope I can return the favor sometime!

Take out all the covers. When my Z34 had the tranny replaced did not had to take the engine out with the tranny. That is really a complex engine bay to work with and nothing like what you are saying happened. There must be something that you forgot to take out a cover, bracket, something

I am currently doing the same thing, only with a 3.1. I have spent about an hour looking at this thing trying to figure how it comes out. I am really considering dropping the whole subframe, and then takeing it apart. Post back if you figure anything out, and I will do likewise.

I have a Haynes manual ordered and should be here by mid week. I tried everything everyone recommended but no joy, so I have since bolted it back up, but haven't had time to work on it this week. I looked to see what the Haynes manuals I have said about two of my other kids cars, a 90 skylark and a 93 saturn. the skylark drops down and in real life looks like it should. the saturn is to be removed with the engine as a unit and looks as oppositional as this pontiac. I am betting Mr. Haynes will recommend removal of the tranny with the engine but we will see. I guess the upside would be the spark plugs on the backside and the heater hoses I need to replace will be alot easier to get to? I will let ya know for sure what I find and plan to do after that. thanks for the reply!

I got the Haynes manual today. Got 2 choices.
1. You can remove the tranny out of the bottom if you drop the sub frame with it.....OR
2. You can pull it out the top as a unit with the engine. It was noted might need to take off the master cylinder and remove the pinbolt out of the steering knuckle to make room for clearances. I'm planning to opt for pulling it as a unit. Good luck to ya!
