1/12 chevy gasser project

Well here I go again. Another big project. This is Monogram's 1/12 scale '57 Chevy. I am going to build it as a circa 1967 Gasser. Engine will be a blown and injected 427 big block Chevy. I will scratchbuild the front leaf spring/drop axle suspension, and the rear leafsprings. The rear wheels and tires will be different than those in the pics, but I will probably stay with the whitewalls and Cragars shown on the front. I would like to use 5 slot Halibrand spindle mounts, but I don't know of any in this scale. If anybody does, PLEASE let me know. As far as paint I have not decided, but it will be typical '60s flavored. Maybe flames or a lace pattern, but definitly gaudy. I am also considering a flip front clip.

I gotta long way to go,but I'll keep ya's posted, and any suggestions are more than welcome.

yes the trim is chrome but it is junk........I will either rechrome or use foil to fix it.

Im not a big fan of the way these cars sat, but that's just me. Can you supply some more details of the kit, I'd like to purchase one, the 57 chevy has always been a favorite of mine.

I'd much prefer to see it like this, but that is my opinion.

Well I can tell you this much, the engine (small block) is good. You get 3 options, a stock fuel injected, a blown smallblock or a tunnel ram with dual quads. * note I am using the big block from Monograms 1/12 scale vette.
The chassis is simplified, and not well detailed. front suspension consists of only 3 pieces :disappoin
The interior engraving is terrible. The detail on the door panels etc. is very shallow. :disappoin
The body is ok,but be prepared to work on it.The chrome is typical Monogram as you can see the red plastic showing in some spots.

Its not a great kit at all, I plan to use the body and frame, and not a whole lot else.

Yeah..typical of monograms older kits are non-fully covered chrome parts. I'm still a big fan and will try to find a place that carries this for a future/summer project. Again, best of luck to ya on this one.

I built a custom firewall from styrene to allow the front clip to flip open

the last pic shows the flip front end

all of this is still kinda rough, but it will get there. after the body is done I will start on the susp......I am making brass leaf springs ladder bars etc.

Nice work so far, Have you built any of the engine yet? I'd like to try my hand at one of these larger scale kits some day..

thanks guys........the bead is styrene halfround, and all I've done to the engine is cement the two halves together.I am waiting on some styrene to help detail the engine before I go any further there.

ok.....another update......

First the front springs. I made the springs with brass strips and tubing, soldered them together ,and used left over photoetch sprue for the spring bands. I still need to make shakles for the rear of the springs, but I used C channel for the front mounts.

Next up,a new trunk floor. I removed the stock trunk floor with the molded in gas tank and spare tire well. I made a new floor from styrene and halfround.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/98443trunk.JPG

I also had to remove the "MOROSO" lettering from the valve covers. Moroso valve covers were not around yet in 1967 (at least my reference says so) so I made them plain. They will be Alclad when finished.

Let me know what ya think.

WOW...................................
Very, very kool project...

Mate, I can't beleive you found those tyres on evil-bay, great find..

I've been trying to think of a way to make some in 1/12 scale for a project of mine, short of casting them myself......
I need some large slicks for a Pro-Mod Vette.............

Can't wait to see more progress.

cheers stump :aus:
