can anyone tell me how many quart capacity the 97 malibu trans has. Not what is in the pan, but what the entire trans holds.

I got 5 quarts out of the pan, does this sound about right?

5 quarts is about what the transmission pan holds. If you are doing just a filter and fluid change its about 7 quarts. The entire transmission, torque converter and all is 13qts.

thanks. I measured the 5 quarts that came out, then I put 5 quarts back in. Do you think this will be okay? I noticed you mentioned 7 quarts.

Since the transmission is sealed, if you have noticed no leaks from the transmission and the seams/seals seem dry all around the transmission, then if you replaced with an equal amount of fluid you *should* be fine. However, there is a method to check for the proper amount of fluid. I posted the method in a previous post. You can find it here: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=205224

I know that you actually were the start of that thread, too. However, that is the only guaranteed method that you have the correct amount in there currently. For a piece of hardware so expensive, it might be worth it to "double check" it.

now i've got a slight leak from the gasket. I reused the old one, which they say is "reusable" the filter came with a cork gasket. Are cork gaskets any good?
