My friend sold me his 2 10in 1000 watt sub box by Dual for $20, so I thought hey why not. I purchased a decent amp for it, Sony Xplod 760 watt dual channel amp, and a 8 guage wiring kit. I wired everything, and when I turned on the system, nothing happended with the subs. After a while, the Over Current light on the amp went on and smoke started coming in the box. I immediately turned off my car and opened up the sub box. The wires inside the actual sub box from the outside terminals to the subs were really thin and crappy, probably 18 guage or so, and frayed on the edges. So I took the subs out of the box and hooked them directly to my amp using my wire. One of the subs didnt work at all and the other one slightly buzzed, so I am guessing they are dead. I want to buy new subs, but I want to make sure what caused this meltdown. My friends wont let me borrow their subs to test out my amp, but it seems to be working fine. Do you think that the cheap wires inside the sub box could have caused the meltdown?

Sony Xplod sux period. Their 760 Watt amp, is actually only 380 Watts which end out being a whopping 150 RMS watts a channel... wow, what a rip off

if the wires were touching wach other, you most likely fried the amp, get a cheap speaker from somewhere and try hooking it to the amp to see if it works.

I think you probably overloaded the subs, It sounds like you gave them too much clipped power.

Well I bought new subs and they work fine after I rewired the box. Thanks for replies. Oh, and any advice for the Hz, dB settings?
