I think this was already a thread before but I couldn't find it (if it does exist can a mod change the title to: "Why do you build? (2)", but I figured that there are quite a few new people here so heres the big question::
Why do you build?
I build because I can't afford most of the cars I build (though i suppose if i stopped building I'd have some extra money and maybe i could). I like being creative and trying something different with my kits. I also feel I can express myself through some of my builds.

I've been building on and off for 35 years...!
I guess it's a car thing, a creative outlet.
I started up again, a couple of years ago, in a "use it or loose it" mode.
It was a decision to build some of my un-built kits or sell them.
:p

First of all I love cars. Mostly Japanese Permormance and America Muscle. And again the only way to get them is to buy them ... as models of course :icon16:
Than I enjoy painting detailed models. It's like giving the car a birth. And it's my hobby in which I enjoy.
Like in F'n'F: "... there's something with engines/cars that calms me down ..." :iceslolan

I build for most of the above reasons, but also to escape from my real car.
I have this project car I bought a while ago that is taking up a lot of my time.
Some days when the weather is bad, I just sit inside and work in plastic instead of turning wrenches and busting up my knuckles.
So instead I shave plastic with a knife and glue my fingers together.
(plus the fumes are great!!!)

Simple reason. To get away from the everyday hassles, aggrevations, and stress of real life. I find peace in it. Yes, even when I spill glue on a painted body or when the pin vise clears the plastic and begins drilling skin.

Why do I build?
I build because of finnacial reasons, but Im sure with all the money I have spent on Models I could by a decent car. I like to get things quickly, so models are the thing.
I love design/fabricating bodywork on real cars, and I feel if I want to test something out for looks, I can work on a $20 dollar car and not a $20,000 car.
My modeling is an expression of how I think...(i.e. My Hot Rod project is complicated, and so am I :grinno:)

Because I can... which sounds odd, but it's one of the few things I'm genuinelly good at and I enjoy. If people can derive pleasure from looking at what I create so much the better. But basically I build for me. It's the same reason I'll sell any model I build, but I won't take commissions. Each of my models is a personal experience, and they are unique to me. Building to request would take away from that.

To build up a nice collection of cars which I will never own in real life. It's a relaxing get away, easy to pick up, but very addictive. And with AF, it is even more interesting, to see different outcomes of a kit.. I took up the hobby a long time ago, but then left it because of studies, I have recently picked it up again and getting more out of it by reading within the forum.

I was thinking about this very thing the other night. I really don't know why I build. I mean sure, I know all the benefits, the pride, the relaxation, the challenge. There are other aspects of my life that I could boil down to those benefits, though. Racing, working out, writing, my vocation even. But building gets the most of my energies, and I don't know why.
It defines me, that's for certain. It's one of my most dominant defining traits, probably because it can draw on all the smaller traits I carry that form my personality. It's almost the culmination of my skills, talents, interests, and sense. Building models draws on aspects, often constructive, of myself that are otherwise ambiguously defined, and shapes them into something very definable and soild, though still completely unmarketable in the end.
Ok sorry.

There are many reasons I build models. One, there is no better feeling in the world than completing an amazing model that you love.It is truly a great feeling. Two, modeling can be safe haven from all of lifes everyday stresses and problems. As frustrating as models can be, they really help releive stress. Third, I LOVE CARS. Cars are my passion and always have been. I love cars and all of their forms (not crazy for Japanese imports but theyre cool). Lastly models are great gifts. Its fun to give some1 an exact replica of their own car

Similar to what has already been said, I began building again (after a 20 odd year hiatus) on a suggestion from my doctor as a method for stress relief. I took her advice and started doing it again a couple of years ago and am now thoroughly hooked. If something or someone at work causes me to become stressed, just five minutes thinking about my next/current project is enough to clear my mind and then allow me to clearly focus on the issues that are causing the stress in the first place. It really is the best therapy. Other people achieve a similar result with gardening, stamp or coin collecting, or watching trains. I guess for me its building scale model replicas of vehicles that I would like to own.

I build so that I can lose myself in the kit. Subject matter is not really important, but I seem to go in themes.....first there was the ww2 aircraft phase, then the jet phase, when I was a kid it was cars, cars, cars. I went thru a German armour phase to. Now I am into classic race cars ( wait til you see the next 1/12 scale project). I build the model in my head several time over before I actually sit down at the bench. Its this part of the build I like most, the planning and development....and then to see it become real,on the bench. When i get into a project I REALLY get into it. Some days I will sit down at noon, start building, and the next thing its midnight. My wife knows that when I get into this "groove" not to distract me too much. I guess for me its just an escape, thats really what it is,because I am totally focused.
I really enjoy the history of the things I build,I like to learn about old cars, planes etc. Then seeing the object in 3 dimensions as the kit comes together just completes the expirence.

Why do i build?
There are many reasons: 1. Because i love cars and bikes!! 2. Real cars are so expensive to modify them so i have to build models. 3. Its relaxing. 4. I started playing legos when i was young and i continued to build models. 5. It is so fun!! 6. I can show my models to my friends and they are so jealous to me.:iceslolan 7.It gives challenges to life.
8. I can make them that kind what i want.
And there are many reasons more..

Hard Question :
I love Japanese performance Cars
I love to do things with my hands
It takes me away from the real life stresses
Passes time.
Give enjoyment to see a completed model
Make me strive to be better
Makes me learn new skills (considering buying a modelling metalwork lathe)
If I did I would have missed out on all you guys and this place.
Stops me spending money on the 1:1 350Z
I get to see something from start to finish, unlike the real job which I only see the start not the finish (CAD Draughsman)

couldnt put it better myself
substitute 350z for is200 tho,
but i toatly agree with the striving to be better, every model i build brings me further along.

Because...
Because I'm addicted to everything that is about cars, especially good looking ones,
because it's a way not to forget all the years spent playing LEGO,
because I always need to do something with my fingers (clicking the mouse, typing on the keyboard, cuting, sanding, gluing...)
because I feel it's a better way to live my frustration than having posters of this $$$$$$ Lamborghini!...
... but mainly because one day, I don't know why, I told myself "why not?" and bought my first kit. And like cigarettes, I've loved that and haven't managed to stop till now...
...And if your "why" was asking for the goal: just maybe the dream of making one day my own-designed (model) cars!... Well, I also build because I can't afford a real Japanese Performance car. I drive a '94 Toyota Corolla 1.3 (90bhp, not quiet performance...) so I think it's obvious I can't afford... I have so many reasons. I don't want to spend all of my money on mods for my 1:1 cars right now, so it's just cheaper to build models. Building models helps keep me motivated to actually afford all my dream cars, it's a good way to challenge myself, and it's a much better use of my time than playing video games all day. Also, it's just a very enjoyable hobby, except for the times when cut myself and superglue my fingers together. :icon16:

At first I wanted to build cars w/ custome wheels and lowered suspension, ya know Drift style.
I was discouraged w/ the amount of time involved.
Auto rendering is my true desire and I don't want to spend much time building the cars.
Now, I have shifted my thoughts about model cars:
Just build stock and modify on my drafting table :)
I am trying to focus on doing great paint jobs.
So, I build now for references for my artwork. :iceslolan
