there's a cover on the button pull that off, then you turn the button about 90degrees and it should come off. then there's a screw holding the shifter grip on the stick

thats for the manual, for the auto on the front of the shifter on the bottem(the side facing the radio) there is a little staple. all you have to do is pull the staple straight out and the shifter will pull off (straight up). to put it back on just slide the shifter on the selector and replace the pin...

that's for the auto, i know this cause my friend's camaro is missing the cover over the push button, and going down the road you tend to play with it, and if you turn it 90degrees the damn thing will pop off. but i guess you probly wouldn't have to take the button off to get the whole shifter knob off. i thought that's what he was asking. also, my friends has a screw, but someone might have put that screw there

what year is your friend's cause i got a 94 auto and all you have to do is pull the pin on the front and it the whole shifter slides off. so simple i took off the selector plate at a stop light once cause i forgot to plug the little light back in thats under it. im interested to know why his is different from mine, did gm change it from year to year?

that might be it. doesnt really make sense that you would change how a shift knob works but i guess thats why im not making cars...

why leave parts the same, general motors wouldn't be makin money if everthing was universal :)
