Hi, i know it's a seemingly stupid question and one which i expect everyone else except me knows :P, but, i did try to look it up and didn't come up wit nehtin....what does DOHC mean and/or what is it referring to?
i assume it has something to do regarding engines, but what exactly it is or does i don't know...
Also, while i'm here, was wonderin how having a "V-Tec" engine helps u?i THINK that they are found mainly in Nissan models....and that it is supposed to be more powerful than the normal ones, but exact specs?
Thanks

DOHC means Duel Overhead Cams
Basically it means the camshafts are placed between the intake manifold and the block rather than in the block
A V-tec enine bacically give better airflow through the intake manifold there for giving a better air fuel mixture in the combustion chamber which increases the rate of combustion. the better the rate of combustion the more efficently the vehicle runs which increases the performance

If V-techs last longer, then why won't most american car companys use them instead of Dohc's? Is it cause of the type of metal that they're made of? Or are Dohcs cheaper to make? I've seen mostly V-Techs in japanese cars like hondas and acruas which are most famous for using them, and dohcs in american cars.

only Honda and it's American company Acura use V-tec no other automobile manufacturers use an engine with V-tec...

there are different variations such as Toyota with VVT-i for example

There is so much incorrect information here I don't know where to start. In a dohc engine the camshafts are above the cylinderhead instead of closer to the crank below the cylinder heads. In v-8 push rods the cam resides below the lifter valley between the 2 banks. Vtec allows the camshaft to behave in 2 different ways depending on rpm load ect. Many many modern engines use a simalar principal but don't call it vtec which is honda's patented term
