Common Transmission Failures

I'm looking for a list of common transmission failures for a 1997 4WD Jimmy. The problem is no reverse gear and I've been told that this is a common problem with this model. Before taking it in for repair, I want to know more about the problem before I sink a lot on money into getting it repaired versus buying a rebuilt transmission.
