f 150 won't run when in gear

My 1983 ford f 150 with a 302 is giving me fits. It starts fine and idles fine. I can rev the engine, turn it off and start it again with no problem. When I put it in gear and try to accelerate, it runs very rough and barely sputters along, whether I barely hit the gas or put it to the floor. After about two blocks, it dies. Then, to get it started again and keep it running, I have to keep the accelerator to the floor (and it is barely running at that). Eventually it will quit all together and I won't be able to start it again for hours. Anybody have any ideas?

Is it fuel injected or carburetor?

It has a carburetor, Motorcraft 2150. My brother and I put a rebuild kit on it recently.

Any smoke when it does this? Sounds like a carb adjustment or a float too high. Also could be the oposite, not enough fuel, how long since you changed the fuel filter?

I tried a new fuel filter first. That didn't do it. But we did adjust the choke housing and disconnected the vacuum hose from the air cleaner that is connected to the PCV valve and plugged it. It kept closing the fresh air intake on the air cleaner housing. It runs good now but I would like to find a vacuum hose diagram for the engine. Besides that vacuum hose, I also had to disconnect and plug the vacuum hose that connects to the fuel bowl vent valve.
