VR4 vs STI, why oh why did he stop

so just now i went to go pick up my aunts at bingo, and i'm getting on the on ramp and outa know where this sti comes flying buy with no warning, damn i can't down shift cause my synchro's are bad :banghead: i'm at 3000rpm in second gear so i take of anyway, right of the back he was 1 1/2 car lengths ahead of me by the time i got to full throttle he was 2 1/2 car lengths ahead of me, by the time i shifted to 3rd gear and going i gained a car length back, by the time we reached the freeway i way he shut down. "oh my gosh you fag!" so i got next to him and he wouldn't race anymore, i put my hands in the air and he shook his head as he was getting of the next exit. s%*t i coulda had him, i think, well i was gaining on him, sloooowwly but i was.

maybe he wasnt racing? i always open it up on the on/off ramps... especially if they have curves.. i think you would take him on the freeway anyways.. VR4s have a pretty decent top end right?

yep. its possible he wasn't racing but c'mon no other cars in sight he see's a vr4 with exhaust and then floors it. i mean its possible he wasn't racing but it seemed as if he was trying to make a statement, so i made one back :evillol:

Is that good for your tranny? I don't usually hear of people downshifting into first at 35mph. My car won't let you even if you tried.

my car won't even let you put it in 1st gear most of the time, unless you're almost at a dead stop. it makes rolling through a stop sign a pain in the ass.

yeah i cant stand that bullsh*t either, its like those guys who rev on you going in the other direction, then you go to chase after them and they dont want any, i say f*ck em cause theyre chicken sh*t, and now the only thing that sucks is hes going to go brag to his friends about it

you know i could be wrong, i might not have been able to shift down to 1st :dunno: (i guess i woulda found out), i havent been able to down shift to 1st gear for so long cause my synchro's that i could be mistaken, cause now i have to come to a dead stop in order to whift in to 1st, otherwise it will grind. but i think i can, i'd probably be at 4500 rpm if i did

The tranny really doesn’t have problems with jumping into first from any gear as long as the car is under 60 or so. Its that darn second syncro going from first to second that’s the issue 99% of the time that there is a tranny issue.

I got a 96 vr4 and it wont let me downshift to first, even with double clutching, I get alot of resistance unless I'm at almost a deadstop. I mean...I can get it in, but the resistance leads me to believe the tranny would prefer I didn't, but I don't have any grinding....
Besides our 2nd and 3rd gears are pretty damn fast at accelerating under WOT after 3000rpms anyway. But that does suck. There is a guy up here who got an STi and we used to mildly race(right before rush hour) on my way home from class last semester. I guess he was getting out of work about the same time because we would see each other 2 or so times a week, but we never got to really race, because there was always traffic to weave through...and neither of us were suicidal.

thats what i thought, but wasn't sure. i know its harder to shift in to 1st the faster your going but i think i remember bieng able to shift into 1st around 35mph

Shouldnt the VR4 be faster if not as fast as a STI stock? How much more does the VR4 weigh then the STI?

VR-4 weights anywhere from 3500-3600 lbs. the STi weights 3300 lbs

yeah first gear may have been a little much, but on the freeway he probably wanted to shut down knowing that the vr4 is more or a top end performer than the AWD sti. knowing that he exited right away he might have been in a hurry to take a dump or somthing. :2cents:

damn thats to bad that your car weighs as much as a boat, but if it was lighter you would have no problem with bottom end.

you got to love them STIs very respectable cars!

indeed, i'd love to own one.

I personally don't think we have any problems with bottom end...we have AWD as well which allows for 6k launches, and our weight is a bit excessive, but definantly more of an issue in people's minds then on the track.
The AWD is actually what hurts us top end. Granted we can go 160 stock, but the drivetrain loss of power through AWD is greater that is why RWD supras run equal times stock as we do. We dominate the beginning 1/8th, they catch up the 2nd 1/8.
The STi is a sweet car, and probably doesn't have the top end we have, but its AWD isn't the reason...it's its gearing.

I second that. Having rally roots, the STI is geared for short bursts of acceleration, a.k.a. from corner to corner, and is not really much of a top speed performer. If you ever watch the WRC on speed channel, the rally cars top out at about 215 km/h, which is 133.3 mph, to be exact.....but it gets to that top speed in a hurry, that's for sure.

I hate people like that too. They come along all fast and next thing you know you go next to them and they won't even bite.

DAMN u can go to 60mph in first gear? So u can basical do ur 0-60 time in first gear. You change ur gear ratios? What mods did u do to do that. I can only reach 45 and i hit my revlimiter.

It's not bottem end that our cars have problems with. It's usually the mid range. I noticed everytime i race my friends Camaro SS i kill him of the start and i shift to second and that's when he usually regains most of the lead i get from the start. And by third gear we even out. But i still have a lead of about 1 car sometimes half a car length if my friend gets a good launch.

Second gear is short but not that short. For me it is. 1st 0-45, 2nd 45-80, 3rd 80-120, 4th 120-145, 5th and 6th 145+

well people always talk about how the 1st gens have better gearing for the 1320, maybe that has something to do with it, i don't know but i beleive yogs said his reaches 60mph also.

Yeah I got a 2nd gen, and I think I shift to 2nd before 60, but in the quarter I am running over/around a 100 and still have space in 3rd.

i'm tryna find mph for gearing on the net somewhere cause just to make sure i went outside again and floored it in 1st gear and it reaches like 59mph and then redline like juuuust before 60.

i seriously think its cause you have 6 gears and i have 5, thats the only thing i can think of
