I have had my car for a very long time, and have been fixing little problems all the way up the road. But now when I try to start the car it trys and trys to catch but fails. However it will catch if I hold in the gas pedal, but it sounds like a motorcycle about ready to die, some smoke comes out of the exaust showered with backfires. Can anyone tell me what to do, I need her back up and running.

hmm.. Should be a 305 tbi? It sounds like a fuel problem, however it could be a lot of things..
pull the air cleaner off and have someone crank the car over.. You should be able to see a fair amount of fuel being injected into the throttle body

Also, check the timing! Visually inspect the plugs, wires, and ignition componants and wires

it's your ignition coil, replace it along with cap and rotor.
