Buying advice

I know this is the maintenance forum but my purchase question has to do with maintenance. I recently saw an add for a 1987 supra turbo. It has lots of performance upgrades that were professionally installed. The guy wants $2200 for it. He says reason for low price is that " It has been sitting for about a year because it started to run rich and choke under boost" My questions are these: Would it be a good idea to buy this car for a lowball price of say $1000 and spend another $1000 on repairs. I dont work on cars much myself but have a few friends that are mechanics. Does it sound like I could make this a reliable car for $1000 in maintence or will it end up costing me a lot more than that in the long run. Thanks very much anyone who can offer some advice. I would love to have a car with 300+ hp for under $3000 but dont want to end up spending that and find out im just going to have to shell out a bunch more.

Running ruch under boost could be a few things, pulling the codes would help on that one, if it's worth it depends on how good you can bargain, how much work you can do, how much money you make, how much HP you want to run, and how much your willing to put into supporting mods to run that. 300hp for 3K is easy, there are bolt on turbo kits now that can make that, if your including the price of the car and repairs to get it up to standard though it could be more difficult for you. Find out exactly what upgrades the car has, exactly what has been replaced, everything. Plan on spending more money, it's a Supra, the more HP you want to run the more money you'll be dumping into it. This is money you'll never see again also, you won't get it out in a resale, if you love the car it's no problem, if you don't then you need to do some thinking. If you keep the "I don't want to spend money but want HP" mindset your going to blow the HG very soon. So it's all up to you, these are amazing machines and are capable of more than most everyone gives them credit for if you know what your doing.

If you decide to buy a Supra, be prepared to work on it. People really hot rod 'em, (don't blame them) as long as the car described doesn't have too many major problems, it sounds like a decent deal.
