the only place you have to cut is in front of the rear end. if you cut behind it will be much more difficult to take it out unless you have access to a lift then cut behind it because youll have room to manuever the tubing.

oh geezus, please for the love of god dont try this on the floor, i just installed a set of edelbrock TES headers on my 89 IROC, backed by an american thunder exhaust system, and without a lift, i wouldnt have been able to do it. its a pain in the ass. heres what i learend along the way.
Driver side header - have to remove all spark plug wires, spark plugs, AIR injection valve and rubber hose (if equipped) - steering shaft - and you might have to bend some brake lines to avoid the headers. then drop the header in, and put it all back together.
Passenger side header - (oh man this was a bitch) - remove the serpentine belt - remove the AC compressor - remove the AC condencer - remove the AIR pump diverter assembly, the valve housing that all the AIR hoses connect to, with two electrical connectors on it, unbolt it at the air pump, and remove it, after taking off all the hoses - then put the header in forward of where its gonna be, and slowly move it back and down as you kinda shimmy it into position. you will have clearance issues between the valve cover and the box on the firewall behind the condensor. but it will fit. i recomend against removing the starter and puttin it in from the bottom because i couldnt get it to fit in that way. route the spark plug wires, put in spark plugs, and reinstall everything. you will need to modify the AC compressor support bar. directions are included in the TES header package.
Y pipe - install the driver side short pipe with supplied dougnut torque just a bit beyone finger tight, but not solid. then slide the passenger side pipe onto the driver side pipe and up onto the passenger side header from below, pretty easy once you look at it. (also with the supplied dougnut installed) the dougnuts are tight, best way i found to get em on is to twist them on a little, make sure they are on strait, and then whack them with the palm of your hand, and they will seat down where they are supposed to be. be sure not to try and put them between the two pipes and try to screw the pipes together, youll ruin the dougnuts, install them on the Y pipe's first, then bolt it all together.
Exhaust - why oh why does everyone weld these things, its soooo annoying. but yeah, cut it in front of the axle, so you can fish it up and over, and unbolt it from the Y pipe if you can, or torch it off if you have to. actually, i would unbolt the exhaust pipe from the cat, buy a new cat, so that you dont have any trouble sliding it onto the Edelbrock Y pipe but thats just me. i did mine alone with no help, and it showed, lol, its sagging hardcore in the middle, so i recomend you do what ill have to do tomorrow at work. put everything together kinda loose, then using jack stands or christmas trees (Depending on how high up you have this thing) to support the exhaust all the way back holding it where it is supposed to be. then tighten all your exhaust clamps, or *shudder* weld all your seams. then, you should be done. good luck.

when i had my cat-back exhaust installed it only cost 50 bucks. a couple of my friends have run into problems with headers. they are afraid to install them themselves, and there aren't any shops around here that will do it. It's a lot of work. So i would guarantee it wont come cheap..

my quote for headers from the local shop was 400 bucks, they also wanted 200 for my flowmaster american thunder system which was a rip, they claimed they ahd to cut and weld and all this mess, i did the whole thing with no help in around 30 minutes, no cutting or welding required.
as far as the fourth gen, you apparently got more skil than me man, cuz from what ive heard the fourth gen headers are more of a pain than third gens. but ive never tried myself so really dunno.
the fourth gen dash will not fit in a third gen, not to mention it would just look bad :(
