CHECK ENGINE light on 2000 Rodeo

The light came on last week for the first time when the gas was running very low.
I got gas, the light didnt go away then put the car in the garage, watched TV, did other work. Then I had to drive it again in about 2-3 hours. Turn it on, the engine light isnt ON. Im happy :)
Today, some 4-5 days later, the gas light is on and then CHECK ENGINE light comes on.
Ive no clue what causes that and have no time right now to give it to the mechanic. Its 2000 rodeo with almost 29,000 on it.
There's a rattle from what I think is the transmission (makes weird mechanical noise at high RPMs), but people say its a loose headshield so I never got that checked out and had that for months. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.
The car was off for about 2-3 hours today and after I got it started, the light didnt disappear like I was hoping (like last time).
Any suggestions? Ideas?
Warranty ran out on it in November, but I think the tranny warranty still exists? Im not the original owner. Got it last year with 12k

the most common reason for a CEL is the the gas cap is not tight enough. Isuzu recomends 3 clicks, I always do 6.
The rattle sound could be engine ping. A couple of bottles of Chevron Techron concentrate should help a long with cleaning the EGR and PCV.
see my FAQ below for more info:

Your fuel level sending unit is bad, it's a common problem, it is covered under the extended power train warranty. This warranty for the second owner is 5 years 60k miles.

Definatly your fuel level sensor mine started acting up when I got that low on gas(California gas prices) but weird things are going on with my tranny(just had a leaking servo fixed) disengaging and trans light comes on diagnosis says fuel level sensor, something with confusing the computer and not giving trans enough power not sure tring to find out what exactly is going on
