I am no where near a level that I could offer any serious help here.
But the one thing I would say to check would be that the shift lock is disengaging when you press on the brake pedal to shift. If its nice and quiet around you should be able to hear it when it disengages in your shifter, or, if you press the button on the shifting arm, and while keeping pressure on it, press the brake pedal, with the brake depressed slowly ease up on the button, doing that I think you can hear it better and also feel it a little bit when the locking mechanisim disengages.
I would check that, because if I am correct I think that the shift lock device taht requires the key is to override that, and cross your fingers that is the problem, I would imagine it would be much cheaper than transmission work.
G'luck.

"shift interlock", yes that is the problem, apply firm pressure to brake pedal if it will not disengage, you cat look for a small plastic cover in the trim near the shifter, remove it and use your ket to depress the button in there, shift to neutral then start the car. you can then shift into drive etc. then go to the dealer...

I have had that same problem with my interlock switch. I took it up to the dealership and found out that my horns had something to do with blowing out my fuse. And ended up paying 86 dollars for a 1 dollar fuse. So check that out and let me know if that worked.

I just fixed the exact same problem on my '94 Accord - turns out the brake switch (which disengages the cruise control and shift interlock) died. $27 for a replacement at Autozone and about ten minutes of labor and everything was working. You'll have to squeeze under the steering wheel on your back to reach the switch (the brake pedal rests against it) but it swaps out easily.
Of course, I was driving around without brake lights for over a week before I thought about fixing this, so check this switch right away.
