Winter handling

How does the tib do in winter conditions? I've heard the standard michelin tires are trash...bad car for winter driving? or does it handle fairly well?

Mine is a 2001 and the OEM 195/55 R15 Michelins were total trash in the rain, real trash. With those tires The steering wheel felt like the car was on jacks every time you hit a slick spot on a turn (I live in the mountains) the steering would get light and turn like it was not connected to the road and the car just snowplowed. I could gas it and just spin them while driving at speed. I put a set of 205/50 R15 Kumo Exta 712's on it and then it was fine on wet roads. No more light steering in the rain, or tire spin, or breaking loose, and breaking was good too. I have a set of Nitto's on it now. They are better in the dry then the rain but still worked 100% better then the OEM tire. The Kumo's were better in the rain then the Nitto's, and not that bad at all in the dry considering how cheep they cost @ $50/tire.

Were I live it snows and I had to use cable chains.

The Nittos are almost gone so next set will be something better. Anybody got any suggestions on what brand of tire handles the best in the dry for slolom driving with stock rims and suspension in a 205/50 R15?

who ever told oyu the stock michelines are trash is an idiot...
theyre all weather tires... and they work fine... but if oyu dont trust em... get snow tires...
but the michelines are very good... test em out.. if not.. get some snow tires...

the michelin vr-4 tires on my car sucked ass. expensive peices of shit. i got some goodyear eagle rs-a for about 3/4 of the price and they work MUCH better.

handling in the winter depends massivly on what kind of tires you have, not the car.

Nobody told me...They came on the car as OEM and I bought my car new!!!

I commute 120 miles round trip over a well traveled 2 lane mountain road every day rain or shine. I dont care what those tires are rated for, in the rain on those slippery wet oily turns I had to drive like 20 miles an hour or the front end went straight and the steering wheel could turn all the way to lock and it made no differance. Give it the gas on a turn or a straight and the tires instantly broke loose. They were just plain dangerous. I don't care what they cost they were crapola.

Like I said I switched to another brand and I could drive normally for the road conditions and no more sliding and breaking loose.

Talked to other Tiberon owners and they had the same complaint. Talked to the Dealer service department and they said the tires were trash in the rain. Tire dealers confirmed this too. But most of all I drove a whole winter on the Michelins and I have been driving for 35 years and these were the worst tires I have ever driven on in the rain.

Maby the 2001 Tib is to light for them, who knows maby they work better on some other car.

the stock michelin pilot 17s on my 03 gt are crap in the snow. wet handling is pretty good tho and dry handling is superb. but when i have to replace them im sure as hell not getting them again. too damn expensive and theyre not all season.

Your real problem here is that hyundai does not provide good tires on thier cars. I mean the cars are built cheap, so why would the stockie tires be any different?

ok so I guess it's the car itself that has superb handling. I haven't driven it yet with different tires. If it's that much of an improvement then I'm really looking forward to getting new tires.

maybe he michelin pilots are good, but the michelin vr4's on my 01 were horrible nd expensive.

I bought my tibby used and it has Champiro tires on it. Never heard of them but they seem to do alright in the rain. The question I have is on dry roads any kind of groove or pothole in the road will pull my wheel pretty hard. Is this normal, or could it have to do with the tires or something. I mean, if I don't have both hands on the wheel it will take me by surprise sometimes and I have to pull hard to stop my car from swerving.
