Help!! Fuel Pump Problem

I've got a '92 Escort with the 1.9L. It will just die out, when it dies, the service engine soon light comes on and the fuel cut off light comes on too. I put a code scanner on it and it came up a code 542. The scanners manual said its a fuel pump open circuit, electronic assembly motor ground. My other manual said it's a fuel pump secondary circuit failure. What does this stuff mean, do I need a new fuel pump, is a wire bad or is it a problem with that fuel cut off system. Thanks for any help.

Well, first you should be able to hear the fuel pump when you turn the ignition on. Usually, I stand to be corrected, the fuel pump either works or it does not there is no middle ground. You could have a poor ground and you could test this by removing your rear seat bottom and moving the wires around which are on top of the fuel pump housing. See if it cuts off when you move them. Sometimes they become dirty and corroded. Does it cut out when you are driving or when you are idle? The fuel lights will come on even when you turn the ignition to on before the car is started so the lights may not tell you the real problem. You may have a bad fuel cutoff switch also or perhaps a short in it. I don't know if this helps.
