I have a f900 w/8.3 cummins boom truck. I am having some trouble with starting. This truck has two 31 series battery in series with and extra negative post for starter ground. the extra post has power coming back to it instead of it being ground.
could it be a bad starter or bad ground connection or open somewhere?
If i am in the wrong place I am sorry....
If someone can help..I would appreciate it
Aloha

You need a new starter.
Ive got a F-250 1997 And one day it just wouldnt start and a new starter fixed it.
It was the same problem I turned the key and it just clicked.

we can not say you need this with do diag. First off, could be a bad starter, cables, or selonoid. Take a voltmeter and see if you have power on the side of the selonoid going to the starter. if you don't bad selonoid, if you do good. Have someone turn the key so it clicks and put your positive on the large wire connecting to the starter, and the aux. ground and see if you have power, if you do, double check connections and replace starter. If you don't check the cables. Diesel starters are expensive, have to make sure you are replacing the right thing.

Turn on the headlights, if they quit when you attempt to start and your voltage gauge goes way down, most likely you have a bad ground or cable. It could also be a bad (shorted) battery, with two you cannot tell easily except by a load test.
