so ive been racing my friend that has a 91 3000 gt or a 96 or something , when i take off im usually ahead of him till like 3rd gear , when i shift into 3rd and floor it , i slow down like theres no combustion or something , but if i go through my gears slow like normal driving there is no problem , just wanted your insight on it

Probably have to tell a whole lot more info then that, year and all... also have you tried setting the idle, checking plgs and wires, etc. There's a lot of things that could possibly be wrong with it, the more info you put on the forum the better someone can narrow it down for you.

need more info! sounds like its just premature shifting to me.. 3rd gen's were always bad after 2nd gear..
Are you sure your slowing down? Maybe it just seems that way when your buddy's turbos spool up and he blows by you

either premature shifting or your transmission is on its last limb

Well from the way he's talkin, he's got a 5speed..
Maro's were always kinda slow after 2nd gear until the T-56 came out.. That plus he could be shifting a little too early in the power band

yea they were kinda slow after 2nd gear...but hes sayin its beyond slow, like zero acceleration (no combustion (as if you were to roll in nuetral)). the camaros never did that
there is a problem

Well when I got my first third gen with a 5 speed if I was racing and shifted into third before 4500rpm then it seemed like it was dead, but if you shift right at or just after 4500 then you'll chirp the tires and keep going. If that doesn't work then you need to check your timing and make sure your right on point. Also, you might want to invest in a 50000v coil, that'll help too. New plugs and wires are a plus and a new air filter. If that doesn't fix it then it's probably a compression problem. Since the engine doens't have to work as hard in the lower gears then you might not notice it as much as the higher gears. Get a compression checker and check all the cylinders.

I would check your fuel filter first, it sounds like it could be leaning out @ high RPM. If thats OK check your fuel pump pressure and volume. Q-jets are great carbs but they have very small fuel bowls and if your pump can't keep up the fuel bowl can go very low under high RPM.

Check the vacume advance on your carb also, if it's sticky then that will cause the same problem, carb cleaner will usualy fix it, or just get a new manifold and carb.

mike123

ok i phrased that wrong , i checked my vacum lines like from the carb and i was wondering what kinda vacum i should have on a 87camaro , you know how the gauage has some on there i wasnt sure if thats correct for my car, it was like on maybe 15 when 20 is normal

4onFloor
04-16-2004, 03:45 PM
14-22 inches of vacuum is normal, unless you've changed cams. then it will probly be around 10 inches depending on how big the cam is
