hello all
92 ford explorer, 148,000 miles on it, auto. 4wd
i have a 92 ford explorer, friend says that bands are slipping on transmission.( kind of jerks when you first put it into drive)
problem i am having: very little power, when you step on it, it takes a very long time to shift from first to second, etc.
i had a friend tell me(however he is not a mecanic) that the bands on transmission are slipping.
will having these tighten omit that problem? and is that just a quick fix to a bigger problem down the road( like a new transmission) . any help is greatly appreciated. if more info is need please let me know
thank you in advance

No, he is not a mechanic, but would you like to become one? There are two adjustable bands; overdrive and intermediate (2nd). I can almost guarantee that the low/reverse band servo O ring is leaking at this age. This is fairly easy to replace when the pan is dropped. Does the shifting seem more solid once you are out of first. Does the transmission have a delayed engagement going into reverse? One other thing you can try is driving in D and see if the engagment is better. The L/R servo leaking causes reduced pressure that can cause poor engagnent of the forward clutch. Depending how long this has gone on, it may be too late. The L/R servo would cost you about $50 to try for parts fluid and filter.

The low/reverse band is not adjustable.

hi all again!

i just had my tranny rebuilt
worked fine for 2 or 3 days
jumped in it today( let it warm up for about 5 to 10 mins)
took off down the road and it started doing the same thing
( when going down the road, doesn't want to shift from gear to gear, this is an automatic, before tranny was rebuilt same problem was happing, but then you would have to let off of gas to manualy shift it. now even trying that doesn't work)
any suggestions on what else may be causing the problem?
i am at a loss
this is a 92 explorer with about 144,000 miles

more on this from begining
at first i bought a tranny from a junk yard
put it in, worked fine for a week, then same problem as old tranny, so i had one from junk yard pulled out, just figured tranny from junk yard was no good, old one rebuilt and put back in, and here is where i'm at now.( problem above)

update:
took explorer for another ride, i let it warm up for about 5 mins again
( temp outside 60'sh) when i first took off it stayed in 1st for qiute some time, after going down the road a ways, and warming up a bit, it runs fine.
clueless..............

after further reading of previous post, i think i have found my problem,
modulator valve and possibly bad lines.
we give that a shot!, if that don't work, were taking the truck out to pasture to have it put to sleep!!!!!!ha

Your problem all along could have been a bad modulator-
