About the JZA70...

What are some general specs on the car? The turbo model I mean. I am very intersted in getting one and would like to know what it can do, and what potential it has. What kind of power can the 7M-GTE engine handle stock? Is it similar to the 2JZ-GTE at all? Does the car handle well in stock form? Whatever you can tell me is welcome.

Okayyy....if no one knows, can you at least direct me somewhere where I CAN find info on this car?

well, first of all the JZA70 supra was never sold in the US.. All we ever got was the MA70 with what...220hp or something. Not sure on specifics, but I think it came with a 1JZ-gte maybe?... someone else might be able to clear that up.
the 1jz is basically the same engine as the 2JZ just 2.5L instead of 3. It was put in the the Mark II, Chaser, Cresta trio (JZX81-110) and also in the 3rd gen. Soarer. They come in both twin and single (big) turbo varieties and make 280hp stock (with LOTS of room to tune).... of course I'm not sure that the Supra came with this engine, it might of had a 2jz... in japan anyway.

Well, since I last posted a reply(which was 22 days ago), I have found just about all the info I was looking for. You're right about the MA70 chassis code, but they came with a 7M-GTE(turbo, 230-232hp) or 7M-GE(non turbo) engine.

The 7MGT came in the 3 liter version of the 2nd generation supras and soarers (MZ20 and MA70). Those same soarers also had the 2 liter versions with the 1G-GT, which is what I have in my soarer (GZ20). Though it only came in the Supra, there was a 2.5L version called the JZA70 that had 260hp. I'm not sure why it had less hp in that one, but the newer generation 1JZ-GT motors all came with 280HP and now with VVT-i.
The 7MGT was a decent motor, but pretty hefty. There are a lot of parts for them here in Japan, but from what I'm told, they're hell to work on.
The 1G-GT is byfar one of the most dependable motors that Toyota has made. It has just enough stock hp and a lot more room for tuning. Its probably one of the most inexpensive ones to work on too. Its a twin cam twin turbo inline 6 pushing something like 210hp. The older versions were a bit weaker. The non-turbo version (1G-FE) still exists in teh Altezza and with modern technology, it can pull something like 200hp...not sure on that one though.

k 1.. the 1jz is 280hp @ the engine at 6200rpm in all models.. yes they did come in jza70 supras :)
2.... the 7m is 240hp at 5600rpm in the ma70/ma71 1986-1988 toyota supras, the 232hp one is known as the facelift ma70/ma71 1989-1992 supras....
the 7mgte rocks, it has plenty of beef and you don't have to do much to get decent power out of it... mine without bugger all is 184kw @ the wheels and does 13.6's on the 1/4
now the 2ltr 1ggte soapbox in the early model or the later model front mount intercooled version is 210hp @ the engine at 6200rpm

which one hits power first?
i know my choice, although biased lol admittedly the 1jz does spool up faster down low but where is it up high, the 1g's are well reknowned for their laggyness considering the size of their turbos you would think they would spool up quickly, the reason for this between the 2.5 and the 2.0 is the exhaust wheel is much heavier than the 2.5 and slightly longer so logic would have it that the 2.0 is harder to spool, now the 3.0 yes does take a little longer to get on boost, not much longer but the 3.0 has a lot of potential :)
now 7m's are not prone to blowing head gaskets i mite add as well, its just unfortunate that toyotas wisdom was not in place at the time of torquing the head down... i mean is 58 ft pounds really enough for a 3.0 turbo 6 cyl? Once the head has been torqued down correctly there are no problems :)
as i have proven with mine, except for the unfortunate bore size mishap ;)

i am currently working on a conversion for the 1ggte to get rid of the lag in the turbos, hopefully it works out good :D
we're also doing a 1ggeu - 1jzgte transplant

i love all supras, they're awesome and no one really knows them unless they drive a good one :)

oh and 7mgte's are a piece of cake to work on and are extremely dependable as are all the supra motors i would imagine.... but i will say this the 1jz's in a supra... you never ever wanna do a water pump :P that is hell lol

well there's my rant for the day and if you have any comments or want just a simple rant back go hard :D i would be interested in others ideas and opinions :)

Cheers

Good post, lot of information, but why did you reply to a three year old post  Since your correcting them, I guess I'll have to do some correcting too. :)
"2.... the 7m is 240hp at 5600rpm in the ma70/ma71 1986-1988 toyota supras, the 232hp one is known as the facelift ma70/ma71 1989-1992 supras...."
7m-GTE, first put into the A70 in 1987, 230hp with 246ftlb stock, the 232hp in 89+ was supposedly from a redesigned WG. In the first few years the "MA70" was designated the n/a chassis, "MA71" was the Turbo, but that didn't last. Just so everyone knows if they don't already, the JZ, M, and G in the A70 chassis code is the engine designation. The 1g-gte exhaust wheel is steel, the 1jz-gte is a ceramic blade wheel. It's a common swap to switch them out and ditch the ceramic wheels as I'm sure you already know, lag is a moot point because there both versions of the CT12, pea shooters even compared to the CT26. 7m-gte's are prone to blowing HG's, especially if they are pushed hard and/or ragged on. Retorquing the HG will only help if you catch it in the very early stages, low miles, retorquing a HG that's already deteriorating will obviously not do much good. 7m-ge's on the other hand an not prone to blowing HG's near as much, having sub-200hp is the reason but it can blow it just as easily if it's ragged on all the same. Good luck with the 1g, I'm rebuilding mine right now also and should be just as fast as seriously modded 7mgte's here. Nice webpage, some sweet MKIII's on there. What did you do with the silhouette tail covers by the way, still have them? Don't ever give up on the cars, we need more Supra women in the world

lol its all good, i just got all protective :P
and yes you are right i did already know about the engine designation with the a70 chassis, but the ct12s that we have dealt with here are all ceramic :s and i still absolutely disagree with prone to blowing head gaskets lol, i absolutely cane mine and i'm sure if i had the right bore size head gasket mine would have lasted a whole lot longer :P
and yea retorquing a head gasket that's already worn yea nah don't bother lol, just rip it off and get another decent one ;)
oh man those tailights i couldn't even give away lol
hell yea good luck with the 1g did you see the link to hunts page on my links page, you might be interested in that one ;)

hell yea, i know a few years old post but i couldn't help myself lol
oops :P

Cheers

but you never really answered the question...how much power can u get form a non-turbo 7mge 88?
and how much it comes with stock?

Cool, so we agree to disagree about the HG lol :) What do you mean you couldn't give those tail covers away?? Have you been reading supraforums lately, people want them so bad here in the US that some owners have taken it upon themselves to make molds and replicate them, then sell them to the masses. There not my style and wouldn't go on my Supe but there is a nice demand here. As for you Alejo nin, I'd say roughly 350hp is the max, bored and stroked even more than it already is, high compression, with lots of nitrous on top of that. For the same amount of money you could have 700hp from the 7mgte if you know what your doing, also stock n/a is around 200hp.

lol yup sweet as ;) well i tried to give them to multiple ppl here and they just crack up laughing lol sad i know so when i got to a point where i had so much supra junk it wasn't funny a mate came up with his van and just filled it up with it all and the taillights went with it lol
but i've got him to dig them out ;) so stick em on ebay for $200usd you reckon lol need the $$ since i blew me car up *cries* i kinda had a 83mm bore (i think thats factory) head gasket on an 86mm block oops no wonder i blew my 2mm compressed metal head gasket lol dammit
oh well we all learn eh :P

Stock 7MGE is 200HP.

The power you can get depends on how big your wallet is. But for the spending you would do, you're just better off in swapping a 7M-GTE and tranny.

Not many people tune a N/A 7M-GE because it's not as cost effective as a 7M-GTE with upgrades to follow later on down the road.
