Width question...calling all tire experts!

I have an 89 CRX SI with the stock 14' si wheels. Im trying to keep the car as sleeper as possible. I do not like attention from Cops or theives...and I'm not into huge wheels --raising the height of the car or slowing it down. The stock tires on the SI wheels are 185/60/14. I am also on a college budget right now (need to leave $ for books/beer/ramen) I was wondering if someone could tell me how wide of a tire I can run without any trouble, and if so, will they "bubble" out of the rim and look shitty/and/or ride shitty due to the slim wheel size. Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

go to tirerack.com, type in your car and they should tell u the widest your tires can go. if your looking to get better traction, wider tires would nessecarily do the job, it might help a small amount, but thats it. the key to getting traction is from the compound of which the tire was made of.

I guess my real question was --does it make sense to run wider tires than that of the size of the wheel (and will this result in a setup where the tires are actually wider than the wheel and bulge out, possibly creating a worse scenario((in terms of looks and performance)) when compared to the recommended width).

a 195/55/14 would be about the same height. But yah, 195 is the widest you can go. Falken Azenis come in 195/60/14. Had those on my 4th gen and they were great. H-rated tires unlike the other ones which are V-rated I believe, but still one of the best tires I have driven on.

The most important measurement is the width of the rim, it will determine how wide of a tire you can put on it. Tires are designed with a specified range of rim widths, in order for them to flex properly the rim needs to be within the tires design parameters.
