Well, do you have a bud that let's you try the new signal switch in your car? Because if the new thing does not work then you a short circuit near the steering column or under/in dash.

I tried once to jumper the cables to bypass the switch but it did not work. In my case could have been bad luck. Do you have the wiring diagrams? There is someone(CarnutCas) that has an electronic version of the manuals and he might get it for you so you can try to bypass the switch to see what happens. If bypassing the switch works then your problem is getting a new switch

last night i was reading thru the haynes pontiac grand prix book, the diagrams section and they have a section on the charging system..there are 2 fusible links that are shown that i have not checked yet but will..remember this all started when the alternator started to go..yes i did replace alternator...also there is another diagram of the exterior lights circuit (typical) it does not show the unit that chimes/alerts you to when you leave the directionals on too long...I think that this might be the cause of the problem..that if its shorting out it might knock out the directionals in the process..???..anyone know where under the dash this chime unit may be also wether a blown fuse link off the alternator may effect the directionals???--thanx for the input

back again a day later and with updates--i messed around with the fuse for the chime it checked out good...when i plugged it back in it chimed away so then i hit the hazards just to see if anything would work and wadda ya know there blinking again!! so i trird the directionals ..the left blinker does work now but intermittantly the right blinker works better than the left but is so so....better than sticking my hand out the window...i checked out my old switch and found that there was a worn out clip that holds onto and down, the switch as it travels..it was worn and a spring loaded contact beneath was pushing up..causing a no contact situation..i melted the clip with a solder iron into a lower position ..will install in my car this weekend and hope it holds for a while...so your saying what the hell does it all mean??? well i should have just bought a new switch assembly but at the time this all started out with replacing an alternator that was giving me a problem...how do you like my luck??? 2 problems occuring at the same time!!! my fix it twice curse continues!!

MAn easy. When you go to Junk yards is not to get electrical parts. Is to get seats, hoods and stuff like that. Plastic parts when exposed to excesice heat might deform and then what happened to you happens. Great that you could determine that the problem was a poor contact at the switch
