see.. i dont know how the rules are where you live.. but here in jersey.. just for showing up in court.. they drop the ticket lower. example.. i had a 6 point ticket.. and just for showing up, i made a deal that id plead guilty if they knocked it down to 4. there was no way i was going to get away with it, and i was kinda in the same boat as you.

Not trying to be a smartass or anything, but as many tickets as you seem to get the 1st thing id do is try to make friends with one of the cops in your area..:). Now as for the ticket, I read where you already mailed it in and you are gonna fight it and i think thats totally the right decision. Just showing the iniative to fight the ticket is gonna show the judge you care and thats gonna count for something. As for the cop showing up, im not POSITIVE, but im pretty sure that the cop can't write you another ticket for "street racing" 5 months after the fact, especially when he didnt even actually have you clocked on radar. He might be able to give testimony or something as to your racing if he were to show up, but if he is as good natured as you made him out to be, i highly doubt theat he even shows gonna show up.

Thanks for the input guys. I feel better and better about it with every positive reply. And BTW, great idea about getting to know one of the cops because that just reminded me that my dad is friends with the cheif of police in Springfield, MA, where I was pulled over! But.... I already mailed it out so I doubt that SHE can help me now. I'm just going to admit to it in court saying I got caught up in the moment and apologize. I really wasn't going that fast. Sure the speed limit is 35mph, but the speed of traphic on the street is in the 45mph range. I just simply downshifted to 3rd, speeded up a bit, then slowed right back down. There is no way in he ll that it was a race. The cop is out of his mind. I didn't want to make things worse by argueing with him though, so I just let him think what he wanted. I was already nervous as hell because my car is very loud and I was afraid he was going to say something about the exhaust because he was kind of hinting around about it.

Ok well your definetly not going to get charged with street racing now. Street Racing in Mass is not a civil ticket it is a criminal charge in which you need to goto criminal court and have a lawyer. So don't worry about that.

Next your not going to get off that ticket you have no real excuse and as far as estimated speed the state of Mass views that an officer through years of radaring is fairly accurate in estimating the speed of a car. Bottom line is hope the cop don't show-up and you will automatically get-off. Otherwise they will knock some cash of and call it a day. Save a few dollars cause when the insurance premium hits you'll need it.

My friend just told me that the cop won't show for the first court hearing. It is only if I appeal it again after the hearing that he has to show. When I went to court two years ago, every case in the court was for a citation for speeding. And there were no cops at all there for any of the people who went before the judge including myself. I'm not worried about it. When the time comes, I will go to court and hope for the best. If I have to pay it, then I have to pay it. But hopefully I will get it reduced. I'm more concerned with my insurance than the actual ticket.

Yea the first time you goto a clerk of courts in which there is a cop choosen to go that day and just reads the report of what happens. The second time you go infront of a judge and the cop who cited you has to be there. If you care about your insurance you need to get off. Only way you will get off is to pay a local lawyer of the area cause it's all inside handshakes and winks.

What would you do if you were me?? I'm a step 16 and pay $150 a month for insurance (12 months a year). I don't care if it goes up like $10-$20 a month.

yea, that sounds stupid enough for you to say it...

as for the ticket i really don't see what you have to fight. you openly admited to the cop that you were speeding. if your lucky you might get a few bucks knocked off like stated before. just don't get your hopes up. what you should have done is asked for his read out on his rador gun when he asked you how fast you are going. that is his ONLY means of hard evidence (unless he has a video camera). he could have writtin you up if he didn't have the read out but then you would have a solid means to fight it.

good luck buddy.

You don't see what I have to fight? What have I got to lose? If I had decided to just pay it, then I would of had to come up with $250 in less than 20 days. By fighting it, it will give me more time to pay it and I will have to chance at lowering it. The worst that can happen is I have to pay the ticket in full amount of $250. They can't make it any worse. :dunno:

yes, i am awear of that, and i would fight it in your case too.

what i am trying to get across is that your going to look like a jackass to any judge and will proabably see right threw you. just don't get your hopes up that your gonna get a big cut in this.

you said yourself dude. the worst that can happen is you go to court.. and you get nailed with the whole ticket. i mean.. you get some of it knocked off for just showing up and talking to the state attorney or whatever. and if the cop doesn't show.. well then.. the only thing you really have to lose is the time it takes to be in court.

here in alabama, if you go to the hearing, you get charged extra if your found guilty. The first time you go the judge asks if what your plea is, if you plead not guilty, then you get another court date, and thats when the cop shows up.
I got a ticket for reckless driving (which is 6 points, same level as a d.u.i.) all i did was miss a turn, so i whipped it in real fast, and he pulled me over and said i was spinning tires and was sideways and all that stuff. I was 17 at the time and in my parents car. We fought it and won, the judge sent me to driving school, which cost 100, but my record is clean and insurance didnt go up. But if i had lost, i wouldve had to pay court fees, the ticket, and insurance. So its a gamble either way.

Well in Mass there is no extra charge for bringing it to court. Every state operates different. So he is not gambling by fighting it... he has nothing to lose.

I'm in a worse scenario than you...

I'm 20 and trying to fight a "racing on highway" ticket... The other guy got away b/c he was on the right side of the road to pull into a business and run... I got caught up with slow moving cars and busted. I didn't admit to racing and he didn't bust the other guy so I'm going to contest that I wasn't racing I was just accelerating and with the gears installed in my car it shifts hard seeming that I'm racing... or something. I'm trying to work on a better story but that the best I can think of. It was just a take off from a stop light and I hit 2nd then let off... the cop was going to other way and busted a U-turn. Whatcha think of that one. I got court July 9th

I think that im glad I live in Hickville USA AKA south mississippi. The exact scenario you just mentioned has happened to me COUNTLESS times where i pull up to a stoplight with a cop coming in the opposite direction with me and the car in the lane beside me "racing" (never is much of a race in a low 12 second sleeper AKA my nova) and the cops never do anything but point and laugh. Hell my next door neighbor is a cop of a few years and I get him to clock me on radar just seeing how fast my car will go. Thats my best advice to all of you.. instead of worrying about tickets do your best to get a friend on the police force that way you wont have to. I have been stopped NUMEROUS times for doing 60+ in a 25 zone(on the beach) and got nothing but a warning. I really dont wanna sound like im bragging or anything but I think that if your kinda big into street racin you need a friend in law enforcement to help you out.

Chris that sucks, I feel your pain, as I just got a ticket too. But fight it for sure, you will atleast it get lowered if anything, and there is a chance you will get off. Just remember that the clerk magistrate might do anything but give you a court date in front of a judge.

Here where i am from u would have been in jail no questions asked. If u are going 1 mile over the limit its a warning and 2 is a ticket. Our cops don't give breaks even if they know u beleive me i am on probation for 9 months. If that ticket were here i would just pay it. But i guess its different over there.

Yeah the last ticket I got was about a year and half ago in my Cobra. I floored it in first pass a party by my neighborhood. It was a 25 mph zone and two cops just so happened to be at the party because they where making to much noise. I only got up to 35 mph, but the cops gave me a reckless driving ticket since I could've hit a drunk person that wandered into the road. wtf! I went to court and got the ticket deffered for a year and now it's gone. Small town police truely have nothing else better to do.
