Are all KAs loud as hell?

Well, I went looking at cars on Saturday. Cars tested included a '93 Audi 90 cs (amazing gearbox. short clutch, short shift throws) and a '95 Nissan 240SX. My main goal was just to get a feel for these cars to see if I actually do like them (A car might look great on the outside, but if you hate sitting in it, then what's the point, right?). Anyways, I test drove this S14 and it was decent, but not worth the $7k asking price (93k miles, notchy gearbox, wires coming out on both passenger and driver side, horrible tint job, Nissan emblem on the drivers side fender, 'SX' part of the badge missing, paint blemeshes).

Strange thing was, they let me drive it off the lot without asking for a drivers license (i'm only 18 too). One thing that struck me as odd was that the engine was very loud. I had the windows down while driving, so I heard every little bit. This thing honestly sounded like my girlfriend's Jeep Grand Cherokee. Is this what all KAs sound like, or was it just this particular engine? (the Check Engine light was on, if that helps). I figure it might be normal, considering the KA is a truck engine, but just out of curiousity.

I used to have a 97 Altima with a KA. Yeah, it was a bit buzzy, but I don't think the engine would've been loud enough for me to easily hear with the windows down.

The check engine light may or may not lead you to whatever is causing the extra noise.

If you're planning on doing a swap soon, you could just decide to deal with the extra noise.

the KA is a louder motor then most esp an audi. maybe somthings wrong with it for the check light to be on.

Check the air filter, it might be removed, or have the box proped open =). Either of those will make it sound like a 69' firebird. Under normal conditions I really wouldn't consider the KA's to be any louder than other engines.. Check the exaust too, maybe it has a hole in it.

I'll be sure to check that on any other 240s I drive. Definitely not gonna go running back for this one, especially with a $7k asking price in that condition.

Did it sound really wheezy? Mine sounds really really loud, and I think it's the clutch fan. Maybe the bearing is toast and it doesn't like to spin like it used to and it makes noise...but I've been in a few KA cars, and you can hear the fan in all of them but not nearly as loud as mine.

the only thing you can really hear is the fan on mine...then the occational...turbo hissing sound ...but usually the fan...what kinda noise was it? deep rumbling? loud buzzing? some intake or air in parts somtimes cause the noise..or maybe something may be loose in the engine...but if your looking at buying a car. Sounds like that S14 is crap the way you describe it even for 7k....but have fun whatever you decide.

not if you put a silencer on your exhaust

Spray some WD40 on yor belts and see if that eliminates some of the noise. Listen to your injectors (they make clicking noise)

Although I think the KA's for the Navara and 240 were built in different countries to different standards...what was it you told me, Brian? I am teh f0rg3t.

lol theres no problems with it the KA is loud as fuck. I test drove 4 of em and one with an exhaust good lord it was loud. If your not used to hearing that type of engine its gonna sound loud to you. The other guys are just used to it but if your coming off of a FWD import or domestic 2.5L and down yeah its gonna sound loud as hell. To loud for stock if you ask me. The SR20 Sounds alot better in my opinion.

Most N/A's are loud if they are not stock. Removal of the airbox or factory exhaust system will make them noticably lowder.
