Hard Shift

My 88 Max with automatic transmission and 85K miles is shifting pretty hard from 1st to 2nd. I replaced the fluid and still no luck. It runs pretty good, other than some spuddering when I accelerate, but nothing too bad. I hate bringing it to transmission shops because they are so expensive. Is there anything else I should look at before I spend the big bucks to have it look at / fixed?
