Antilock Brakes problem

I just purchased a 2000 silverado extended cab z71 with 23000 miles on it. I notice that frequently, when I apply the brakes to slow down to a stop the anti lock brakes kick in and this is on dry pavement. Any thoughts??? It's got low mileage so I'd be surprised to learn that I need a break job to fix this. Anyone else have this happen to their truck before?? please advise and as always.........thank you

gm has a tech bulletin on this problem it covers several year modles the front wheel speed sensors build up rust between sensor and hubbearing which causes to much airgap and sensor reads intermitten or improper wheel speed abs controler reacts to try to correct wheel speed difference

thank you for the insight to the issue. aside from that...the truck is the balls! I love it...first time truck owner and have absolutely N O regrets with making the switch from a car to a truck.

patrick my name is dan and i have a 2000 silverado z71 extended cab and i just had the same problem i work at a drag racing track on the weekends so i have ties with people that know alot about cars so i took my truck to a racer and he put it on the computer and all it was is a bad sensor try that probably all it is it fixed mine.

by antilock activating do you mean when you step on the break the peddle feels soft and not as solid. Kind of like break fade when the breaks get hot even though they arent? If so, my 2001 is doing the same thing.

Jay, you mentioned a GM tech bullitin. Does that mean the dealer is supposed to fix this, no charge. I dont like going to the dealer for anything unless it's free. They like you to walk in the door backwards bent over with your pants around your ankles.

If it's a sensor that just needs to be cleaned, is it something someone can do in the driveway just by pulling the rotors or something simple.

Depends - you have to pull the calipers off to see the sensor, which is mounted on the hub. Mine were rusted in so bad, there was no way to remove them without destroying the plastic housing they come in. I gave up as I didn't want to buy new sensors.

A cheap way to temporarily fix the problem - remove the abs fuse. The abs dash light will come on, you won't have abs brakes, but you won't run into things when you slow below 7 mph and the abs comes on.

I have a 98 k1500 wich had the same problem and it only took the dealer 3 times to fix it. Now it seems like the problem is back after 50k miles.How hard is it to try to fix yourself.

Below 7 mph isnt the problem, I'm almost stoped by then. It's when I'm comming up on the stoplight at 25 mph and I find myself having to step on the break harder because it feels like I'm just pushing the calipers against the rotor. I did check and my break pads are more than half good.

I have a 97 with the same problem 120k miles what do you have to do to fix it??

Sorry to hear all of you people are having the speed densor issue , BUT, the people who talk about fixing the problem on your driveway or temporarily solving the problem by removing the ABS fuse.....I ask ya'll to please

(no pun intended) for a minute and think about this.....Before you can take off in a vehicle, you must be able to STOP. I personally hate ABS systems myself, however, since my vehicle is equipped with it, I will respect it and not modify or remove it. Reason being is there is nothing worth risking your life (or somedody elses) over.

Dont chance this people, do the responsible thing and have a certified technician repair your ABS system, bfeore you end up hurting somebody....
