what gas is recommended for KA?
publicenemy137

the gas cover says premo gas is recommended, but the 240 only has a compression ratio of 9.5:1 and it's not like it's turboed. Some people say the KA can't burn 93 octane fast enough so 89 is ideal. I usually put 93 just b/c I think it may be the best but some people say 89 may be better. What do you people think?

your car is not new, go ahead and sace your money and put 87 in there, cuz it makes no diffrence at this mileage

but what about the gay engine ping?

If you have trouble with knocking or (ping) use a higher octane. I usually use mid and it works fine.

87, 89, 93 here. if your motor is stock then there is no need for 93. low or mid grade will work fine. but if there is a ping like you said on the low grade then spend the extra 10 cents or so per gallon and get mid.
PureSXyness
04-12-2004, 12:06 PM
so let me get this straight...
you get regular gas, you hear ping, get higher grade next time you fill up?

Umm, If Your Motor Is Pinging On 87 There Is Something Else Wrong. There Is Not One Ka24de I Have Ever Seen, Driven, Or Ridden In That Wasn't Using 87. Hell One Had I/h/e And It Was Using 87.

The motor was built for 87... no need to put any more unless you're running an upgraded ecu or something. Yeah california has shitty gas... even shittier prices :(

OK :naughty: !!!! chem. Engeneering is my major and here is the simple FAQ that many people know:
Octane is a measure of the fuels resistance to detonation. We use AKI (anti-Knock Index)
There is 2 way it can be measured:
MON way (motor octane number)
RON (research octane number)
The gas sample is tested with one cylinder motor (yeah one not 4)
The number on the pump is average of MON and RON
AKI = (MON+RON)/2
SO higher AKI neither dose nor mean that the gas is “more powerful” it just mean it is capable of high-pressure application. Don’t get me wrong a gas with higher AKI is capable of producing more hp then a lower AKI gas W/O damaging the engine.
Cool? :uhoh:
Let me know if u need more details. :)

so, in english, what would be optimal for a KA engine?? inline 4 with 9.5:1 compression ratio
87, 89 yes?

heck, what fuel have you got over there? no wonder it's so much cheaper than here in europe,
I live in austria we have 91, 95, 98 and 100 octane, most cars are fueled with 91 and 95 and usually they can run on both, I always get 95

i saw 98 once at some random service station.
anyway, with these gas prices up so much, just get 87 or 89 octane. there's no need to go up to premium unless you're actually really serious about performance, even though the car does recommend 93 octane.

100 OCTANE!!!!!!
holy crap..
must be really expensive per gallon tho :(
Damn, 100 octane at the pump would be sweet (ours is 87,89,91)
Our TA needs over 97 octane to stop ping, we have to use lead additives which are mostly illegal, and very expensive =(
I'm not sure what he said, but I think it needs like ~105 octane

100 octane costs umm let me calculate
so 1 liter costs ~1.05 euros
that's about ~$1.25
one gallon are 3.8 liters if I am not mistaken...
so that would be ~$4.75 per gallon
that price is very cheap over here, in germany for example you pay that price for 91 octane, wich is the lowest you can get here anyhow

Wait You Guys Are Missing Something.... In Europe They Use The Mon Rating Which Is Lower Than The Aki Rating System. 100 Octane To Them Is About 91-93 To Us. In Japan Thes Use The Ron Rating Which Is Higher Than Us, So That Means 91 Octane To Them Is About 98-100 To Us. We Take The Average Of Both For Our Ratings Which Means Our Gas Isn't That Bad. Japan Is The Place To Be For Gas Octane.... The Other Thing You Can Do Is Run Low-leaded Gas And Remove Your Cat And Retune Your Ecu.

I bet it will be within the next month or two also. Here in va beach I'm paying $1.93 for 93 right now :( Costs over 20 bucks to fill the tank.

I see :) was wondering myself... yeah it sucks fuel is totally expensive over here, but I'm happy that I don't live in germany there it's even more expensive... most of the money I spend each month goes into fuel :| but I like driving ... can't do anything against it

I've heard this several places and I'm pretty sure this is correct...Japan uses just RON to calculate octane levels...rather than the average. Their gas is just as high in octane levels as most places in the US (~92-94). The main benefit of jap gas is that it has lower sulfer content than american gas, but we could do that in America if we wanted it would just hurt us at the pump.
Something no one has mentioned (even the supposed engineering major) is that higher octane retards timing so you can use advanced timing and thus get more power out of the engine. The higher the octane, the slower it burns; add enough octane and you'll actually hinder performance of a stock engine dramatically. Stick to what the manufacturer reccomends (located in your manual or on the gas cap) since they do extensive testing to get the highest gas mileage without hurting your car.
Higher octane gas gives better gas mileage, but since it costs more at the pump you don't really gain anything from that aspect.

you guys are lucky...san diego 220 for 87!.....like 250 for premium....oh and the manual states it is recommended to use premium unleaded but if there is no premium, lower grade is usable.

1.57 in epping...but right near my house it's like 1.65 for 89. I haven't seen a single place that sells 87 around here, even in Lebanon where they have no police and basically nothing both of their gas stations sell 89, 91, and 93. I think I've seen a 94 station around here somewhere...nearly all are 89, 91, and 93 though.
