I am looking at a 68 Buick Electra that the owner says has a 455 in it. Is this possible. I thought the 455's werent around until 1970. And if it is true how can I be sure its a 455 and not a 430 or some other V8? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Steve

The 455 didn't come out till 1970. Would need the engine ID # (it is on the block) to tell the exact engine.

The Moderator is right, 455's came out in 1970. The 430 had the same block, if I'm not mistaken. As far as being another V-8, look at the distributor. If it's in the front, it's not a Chevy.

Take a look at the top of the block in the back where the transmission mounts to the engne (you might have to do a bit of climbing in the engine compartment). Both 430's and 455's have the engine size embossed on the block in large letters. You might might have to wipe the grease off.
