Well last night i put some putty on my S14 Silvia and this morning it was hard as rock. So i proceeded towards sanding. Problem is that the putty is sooo hard that not even my sanding files could sand it down good. I am using 180 grit which is the only one i find that could do anything to it since its soo hard. Anybody know how to get it just a tad bit softer so i could sand.

Thanks,

No clue how to get it softer. In my experience it's always quite hard. Just take your time sanding it. It's a nice putty since it isn't soft and crumbly, but does require some extra time to work with.

i had some squadron green putty that did that. it was so hard there was no sanding or filing it!! but i then got squadron white putty it works better....

i am not sure about tamiya, never used it before.

i would say bust out the dremel with a sanding wheel! hahah

I've never used that kind of putty, but I did use 2-part automotive putty.
It dries hard as steel, but i used 200 grit with plenty of soapy water. It works wonders!
Give it a try, it might work.:2cents:

You can try applying the putty smoother in the first place, soke a cotten bud (q-tip) in lacquer thinner and wiping over the surface removing the bulk of the excess and smoothing the surface.......... then it's just pacience with sanding. :2cents:

You won't get it softer. I never have problems sanding it, I use 240 for rough sanding and that works fine. Are you using fresh sandpaper? The problem with this putty is that it creates a fine dust which tends to clog the sand paper up quite quickly which then gives little effect. If you are sand a large area then the paper needs replacing often, alternatively, wet sand with wet and dry paper.

Too late now but what I do with the Tamiy epoxy putty is shape it with at knife before it fully hardens. Saves time and effort sanding it back a long way. Even once it is cured it is still able to be chisled with a knife before final shaping with sandpaper.

Change the brand of sand paper you are using. If it's meant for wood, that sand paper may not be hard enough for epoxy putty. Or, try using a coarse metal file to file or a hobby knife to carve it.

Im using the 3m sand paper from Auto Zone. I also used a sanding file and my Xacto knife to carve a little on my front :iceslolan

I know how you feel Joeham. I used to use the Tamiya Epoxy Putty and I tried to sand it. After an hour of sanding I havent gotten anywhere. You and I are so used to Bondo.

Get some 60grit sandpaper to do the main shaping. What you have now looks pretty good though!

Also, I have heard Evercoat Eurosoft is a lot like Bondo except it sticks to plastics, you might want to try that.

Thanks Mike, that sounds awesome. Where could i find that. Does it include a liquid hardener like Bondo Body Filler. Does it come mixed?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Its a 2 part automotive filler (Catalyst/hardner and filler). Check an auto shop, Wally-World may have it.
