Fuel problems after engine warms up

I am hoping I can find an answer, given that the Chevy dealer wants $1800.00 to fix what he 'thinks' the problem is.

I have an 89 RS with a 2.8L Multiport - that runs very rough and loses power after it warms up. I lose power and...if I shut it off after a long run ( I work 50 miles away ) I have to wait for it to cool down before it starts again. If it does start it will run rough and have very little power, and I have to keep the RPM high just to keep going. It seems that the longer I run it (in miles at one time) the worse it will become as I go along though it hasnt completely died on me while running it.

When I shut it off, IF it starts again it starts sluggish but after I get going it seems to 'pick up' and take off again (though I still have less power)

The Chevy dealer said that my injectors were shorting out and that happens after it warms up. I amnot an ACE mechanic but I have never heard of such a thing.

Nonetheless, how would you test for this problem? or would any of you have any other ideas?

Thanks in advance

You can buy injector testers relativly cheap..
Sounds like your fuel pump could be bad too though.. Is it just as bad if you have a full tank of fuel as opposed to being low? Run the car til it's good and hot, then take your fuel line apart under the hood and run it into a container, turn the ignition on, pump should run for about 2 seconds and give you enough fuel to start the car...
If you are getting fuel, test the pressure by attaching a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel pressure fitting

Turn the ignition on, while the pump is running you should be gettin' about 35 to 45 psi.. after the pump stops it should drop slightly and hold

Thanks for responding. Yes, it runs just as bad if the tank is full or not. I will do a fuel pump test (has to cost more than what the dealer wanted)

I had to come back and ask. The problem I am having is after I run my car for a bit. What would that have to do with the pressure in the fuel pump or how would that affect it to any change?

Thank you

Just for anyone else having the same or a similar problem.

My problem was in the fuel pump (which was in the tank) seems it would heat up in use and lose the ability to produce enough pressure. If you are having a problem like this BE SURE to do a fuel pressure test BEFORE you take the gas tank out. If you dont have a tester, pay someone to test it for you, it can save you alot in the long run.

Thanks to all who responded in trying to help me with this problem.
