it's an '84 318i. i don't know what to do. one day when i started the car up, it idled up towards 1500-2000 rpm. when i drive it and when i'm in any gear other than first,it's really loud! a friend of mine who knows a little about bm-dubbs, clamped a hose near the idle control valve under the hood, it went back down to where it normally was (600-800 rpm). i also know that it isn't that green idle controle module that goes near the glove compartment. i replaced both that and the control valve ... nothin'.
...help. please!

there is an idle air adjustment screw on the idle air control valve which is located above the valve cover plate. to test if it is inop. Unplug the electrical connector on the left end. if the idle goes up it is working fine. reattach the connection and with a flat head screw driver turn the adjustment screw in turning clockwise instantly you will start to hear the engine idle down. Idle it down to 700-900 rpm level. keep an eye on you tach on the dash to get it in range. that will solve your problem. DO NOT clamp off any hoses if you do the pressue will build you in your engine and blow the gasket.

tomhap, i know very little about bmw's if anything. i can only describe to you that the hose is connected to the idle control valve that's under the hood. and the other end is connected to what i believe is the throttle butterfly or something very near there. i don't know if i'd try that though after getting info from new2bmw. by the way, new2bmw, thanks for the advice, i'll try that!
