Transmission Problem on Discovery I

Hi,
I am having this problem for a long time, and still don't know what to look for. for my Discovery, at the beginning of the day, when the car is not warm up yet, it will not shift into and gear "Reverse, Drive, 1, 2" I will have to wait for about 10 minutes, than I will feel a kick, than the car will be able to move!
I am suspecting it is transmission, since, he car seems to be stuck in gear 1 when it is in the transition to shift up to gear 2, it usually gets up to about 3500rpm, but when the car is warmed up, the problem will be gone!
Does anyone have the same problem? If so, how did you guys fix it? and about how much?

try a filter change with a good synthetic atf and see if it runs better

I would second Cobra's suggestion. It's probably the cheapest and easiest thing to try first. Especially since you are in Canada, it probably has a hard time if the ATF is no good cause it's so cold. Good luck with it and let us know how you get on.

take back what i said...i went to do a filter change on my disco the other day...its not gonna happen...after finally removing the bolts that hold the brace in under the trasmission pan, i realized it wouldnt come out, without removing the y pipe...the exhaust bolts were seized and wouldnt come out...so i wasted 1.5 hours of my time. but i still drained the fluid and replaced what came out with amsoil atf

hey guys I had tranny problems to, mine runned fine when it was cold but as soon as it warmed up it started having problem it would not accelerate i would floor it and it wouldnt move just make noise, also i would hear a bangging noise on the front passenger side. well before this happen i would feel that it hesitated to change from park to drive so i did the trans service. everything worked fine for a couple of days. but when this happened i called in the tow truck and took it the mechanic he took the trans off, and found out that it had some parts that burned up like the solinoids, clutches, cooler, seals, imput shaft and others so i needed to do i rebuild $3200.00 so far thats with everything trans rebuild, torque converter, and trans cooler, and labor I should of taken it to the dealer instead but i thougth i would save money by taking it to the mechanic, that we always go. because i called the dealer and told them what happend they say their transmission are very good and that in most of these cases its the torque converter that goes out. well guys if you had a similar problem let me know because i dont think the tranny would of burned up and thinking that were i got the trans service they probably fucked it up

Heres a little trick with these ZF boxes. If you drop the transfer case and remove the 5-6 bolts on the end plate [the one with the output shaft] you will find the governor. Usually what happens is this governor gets coated with soo much shit and cold temperatures that it won't move corrently hence not allowing the ZF to shift properly. CAREFULLY remove the unit and clean it brake/cleaner PB Blaster dry it well with compressed air and refit. 9 out of 10 times your problem will dissapear. I have brought back 3 ZF's that others said were "gone."
To me 5 hours of my own time and about $0 is better than paying someone else $3200 to fix the problem. Most people think these are throw aways but they are really bullet proof if you ask me.
