Whine

My TA when I go to turn corners slow will make a noticable whine. I have read about tranny whine and stuff but I don't think it sounds like that. I asked my dad and he said it was just because of the limited slip. I just want to make sure it's nothing major. It doesn't do it when I speed up or slow down just when I'm driving around town slow and turn. thanx

where is the whine coming from?

It could be your power steering fluid being a little on the low side. Check it

It could be the rearend(have you ever had the rear end fluid changed out? check this one too. 3/8s drive rachet and you can take the rearend plug out(top side on the passenger side of the pumkin). depending on the mileage on the rear, might want to have it serviced(fluid/new posi additive/etc) and DO NOT let pep boys, the dealership unless you know someone there or jiffy lube touch your car!

I'm assuming you have an A4(auto). I have a T56 but I've never heard a tranny whine in an Fbody. my 5.0 GT AOD would have a "hum" or "whine" in Overdrive on the interstates.....

The sound is coming from the back so I'm thinking it's the diff. I think I'm going to try to do it myself, but when I bought the car it didn't come with the owners manual so can anyone give me good instructions on how to change the fluid and what kind of fluid to use.

well first, i believe you loosen the gear housing and let the fluid drain out, then torque it to specs and refill if i'm not mistaken. Am i right DarkblueTA? For the fluid I would suggest royal purple gear fluid as I hear that stuff's pretty good.

If the rear axle is limited slip (it should be) make sure you put the correct fluid in it. There is a limited slip oil for this application. GM also has an "anti-chatter" additive for GM limited slip axles. If your axle "clunks" or feels like the rear end is trying to steer the car when going around corners (making a 90 degree turn in town for instance), then this additive will help. I would put it in anyway - it will also prevent the clunks.

That's correct. I would pick up the manual for the car at autozone or your local auto parts place. Make sure you use ALL the fluids that they specify for the rear end. have fun putting in the fluid though because its a heavy fluid. I would jack the rear of the car up and put stands under the rear subframe(so the rearend will be free and stay "down" away from the car). This should help in draining the bottles of fluid in the rear. The plug you want to take out to check/add the fluid is on the passenger side. I think its a 3/8 rachet by itself should take it out.
