amps... what are they?

ok, so maybe it's a pretty elementary question, but i'm brand new to the audio scene.

what is an amp?
what does it do?
if i have two subs that are 200 watt subs, do i need a 400 watt amp or a 200 watt amp.

amp is short for amplifier. It amplifies the frequencies coming from your CD player (or whatever you got in you car). You can either hook up a set of 6X9, 6 1/2 and so on and on to an amp to get more volume without overpowering the other speakers or you can set one up (most have gain and bass controls built in) to power a subwoofer or two (where you get bass from).


You need to check whether 200 watts for these subs is peak (whatever they can handle in a short burst) or RMS (their constant load). same with the amp and try to get them matched close.

if you havee 2 subwoofers rated at 200 watts constant, then you need an amplifier that is capable of 400 watts constant.

Yeah, thats basically what I said. Anyways, go to sounddomain.com or crutchfield.com and you should be able to get some more info (wiring diagrams, how to wire it, what to wire it with, etc.)

neither. It would depend on your subwoofer and how bix the box is.
