Police Auctions

I've heard stories about how this person or that person got this great car for dirt cheap at police auctions for years, but when I try to look it up to find out when or where all of the places want me to pay. How do you find out about the auctions, or is there a site that lists them for free?

just check the auctioneer's sites in your area. here the police auctions blow. only cars they sell are pretty much parts only. but if you find a decent one, you can save alot of money. just look out for snake's hair!!! ;-)

Police auctions for vehicles impounded from drug deals may be a good buy, if you can find such a vehicle. The cars you don't want to bid on are the retired police cars. I used to have to work on such vehicles. By the time they end-up at an auction yard, they're nothing but junk! Those cars are being auctioned off because they're not worth fixing. Just think, 200,000 miles or so from about one year worth of 24 hours a day driving. Maybe it's on it's 5th brake job and the rotors or drums are too thin to safely do yet another brake job. There will also be holes in the roof from where the light bar wiring came through. The seats may smell somewhat from the drunks who pee'd in their pants or vomited on the floor while the cop was transporting them to the drunk tank. You get at least one of those transports per day. After the inside cage is removed there will be holes in the floor and the pillar posts. One last thing: The suspension of those police cars was no different than what anybody else could buy off a car lot. That surprised me.

The last cop car I rode in had a hard plastic cover in the back seats in case anyone peed or vomited, and the suspension didn't feel any different than a normal Crown Vicky. I could hear a faint supercharger whine, though. Figures :)

I hate to argue with you, but if you find a captain's or cheif's car, there are no holes in everything, and the suspension on my car IS heavy-duty(found out the hard way buying parts for it). There is a lot of milage on the car, but you wouldn't know it from driving it. It runs smooth, and blows no oil.
The only thing that I would really warn you about is the tranny's. You'll end up having to replace it. Other than that, I have no complaints about this car. I love it, it has treated me well.

Oh, just for the record, my seats don't smell funny. But even if they did, a steam cleaner or shampooer can get rid of that. There is usually a rubber floor in these cars, which makes it extremely easy to clean. As far as brakes go... big deal... brakes aren't that hard to replace.... aren't too expensive either.
