95 GT Starting Problem

Hello all. I have a completely stock 95 GT with a starting problem. It cranks for way too long before it starts. Sometimes I have to stop cranking and let it sit for a few seconds. Then it starts right up. Other than that it runs great with no other symptoms. Any ideas? Thanks.

hehe, mine does same dang thing. im gonna have the fuel pressure checked, then if nothing there, the starter, if nothing there, the timing. I already replaced the fuel filter. I asked some1, and they said it sounded like fuel pump was going bad. It isnt keeping pressure on the system while the car is off. I'll let ya know what i find out.

by the way, fuel pressure check should be free(if u dont have gauge), autozone checks starter for free, but you have to take it off car and timing u can do urself.

thanks for the reply. i thought about the fuel pressure being a problem too. come to think of it, i don't hear that familiar fuel pump whine coming from the back of the car like i have on my other Stangs. i'll call autozone and see about getting it tested. i'll keep you posted too.

i havent had a chance to change pump yet, since its like 75 bucks, but if i turn the key on, then off, then on, etc, for about 4or 5 times, it helps to start right away, since that primes the fuel lines, just so ur not embarressed when it takes a while to crank :)

Yeah, thanks. I found that if I turn the key on and let the pump run for a few seconds, it starts right up. I'm thinking I only need a pressure regulator. Doing some reading, I learned the diaphragm in the regulator can leak or stick and let the pressure bleed down. A quick test of clamping off the fuel line and letting it sit for a while is a good test. Clamping the line off will prevent the loss of pressure. I admit I have not tried it yet. I can tell you, I'd rather swap out the pressure regulator than the fuel pump.

i didnt think about that, thx. i wonder where u would clamp the line at, since most of it is hard lines. Do u know where the pressure reg. is located?

Here is some good info. Further down in the article is the info on where the regulator is and how to change it. http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/fuelreg.html

let me know if you change urs and it helps. im gonna see if there is any way to test the old, before i go and change it. thx for the article! im looking to put a fuel pressure gauge in anyway, so that helped a lot!

Any luck? My problem seems to have corrected itself. I think the diaphragm in the regulator may have been sticking from being stored all winter.

i went on spring break (college student) and then after that i had to go out of town so i havent had time to play with it yet. it did quit on me the other day though when the fuel got close to empty (but wasnt yet, i had about 4 gallons left) so im thinking its the fuel pump, plus when its running, i can hear it whining. when i do change it, i'll let ya know if it helps, and if it was a pain in the @ss.

I had this same exact problem not even a month ago. Its a 95 gt as well. It wasnt the fule pump as that turned on for me you could hear it. So i decided to change the starter see if that was it, but it wasnt. It turns out after everything it was a spark plug modulator that was causing the problem. With my car before i fixed this problem i would turn the ignition and the car just wouldnt start. Then i would let it sit for 2 hours or so and it starts no problem. But then if left idleing long enough the rpms would just drop and the car would cut off. Then when you went to start it again it wouldnt start. Wait 2 hours and repeat. Since changing the spark plug modulator i havent had this problem once since. Hope this helps.
