I AM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT,THE MECHANIC SAID THE CODE IS PO1528,BUT HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.I TRIED DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY BUT IT STAYS ON,HE RESET IT AND IT CAME ON IN ABOUT 2 MINUTES.DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON WHAT IS GOING ON. THANKS :banghead:

The P-code for description for P1528 from my Bentley service manual states it's for "Intake Camshaft Control Circuit, Bank1 Open".

Are there any other symptoms/problems (besides the Check Engine Light) to let you know something might be wrong?

I haven't had any experience with this particular code though (P1582 yes, but not with P1528).

I am currently trying to troubleshoot the P1582 code I have from my ECU. The code denotes "idle adaptation at limit"

I started looking online about a month ago for possible fixes and the two main areas I read about to look at are the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) and the throttle body & throttle position sensor. There appears to be a slight problem with this particular engine letting vapors from the engine back up and through the air intake lines, sometimes depositing some residue in the throttle body and sensor and also on the mass airflow sensor. I have also heard it could be a number of different things that could cause this code including fuel filter, spark plugs, etc. I was getting some help in a seperate posting on mine concerning the MAF. I have even seen some places say it is the idle air control valve (IACV) which the '96 Jetta (ABA engine with Bosch Motronic 5.9 fuel injection system) does not have (at least not single stand alone component on mine).

My engine wasn't running rough or idling poorly, but I wanted to fix any problem before it potentially got worse. I tried cleaning my MAF first, which got rid of a lot of dirt/residue, but it didn't help. I then re-checked the MAF for residue (swabbing it with a Q tip, only to chip the MAF sensor, the sensor is really fragile). I am waiting on parts to relace that then I will remove the throttle body, clean it and see if that does the trick.

When talking to my local deaership, they stated that the code was likely caused by a switch within the throttle body that often goes bad on these cars that age. They stated that it cannot be replaced on its own and I would need a whole new throttle body (~$400) + labor to install and reset the ECU (~$200). I thought I'd try to take care of it myself, first.

The dealerships and others have some better diganostic tools (better than the ODBII reader I got my codes from at AutoZone) that could perhaps pinpoint it a little more accurately, but they may charge for its use.

Look into those. I'll also let you know how my situation works out, if cleaning the throttle body is all it takes.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP ANTON99.I RECALL MY ORIGINAL MECHANIC TELLING ME THAT I NEEDED TO CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY.BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE PROBLEM WHAT AND WHERE IS THE THROTTLE BODY :confused: ? I AM MECHANICALLY INCLINED,BUT IT IS PRETTY MUCH TRIAL AND ERROR WHEN I WORK ON THIS CAR.I WILL USE THE REPAIR MANUAL TO TRY AND FIGURE IT OUT.ANY EXTRA INFO IS HELPFUL.THANKS AGAIN. :cheers:

I have posted a picture in the Member Galleries highlighting the throttle body and the mass air flow sensor in red and blue, respectively. To find it search the member galleries via the "Gallery" link at the top left of this page for "Jetta". The picture is entitled " '96 Jetta ABA Engine"

On this particular engine, the throttle body is located on the top side & rear-passenger side of the engine and the mass air flow sensor connects to the air filter unit forward of the TB. The service manual will of course provide this, and much much more, information.

P1582, I had this code on my 97 vw jetta gt... first thing I did and solved the problem is CHANGE MY OIL.. it was diluted.. Mitchell on Demand tellss you to do that first...O got that code, re-set it at my shop, it came back on 3 days later.. ever since i switched to synthetic oil it stayed off... i have SEVERAL mods(header Full cat back, intake exhaust, chip, cam , gear, under drive crankshaft pulley, p-chip ect.


A shops computer will tell ALOT more than Auto zones they have a generic OBD II machiene whick reads codes and resets ses lights.. one like i have at the shop give grafs, moniters air fuel mixture engine temp.. HI TECH

THANKS FOR THE INFO. I CLEANED OUT THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE MAF.IT STARTS ON THE FIRST CRANK NOW,AND RUNS ALOT SMOOTHER.I ALWAYS USE SYNTHETIC OIL,IS THERE A SPECIFIC ONE THAT IS BETTER FOR THESE GERMAN VEHICLES?I WILL BE TAKING IT TO THE VW SHOP TO HAVE IT RESET TODAY.WILL POST MY RESULTS WHEN I GET THE RESULTS.THANKS

where is camshaft control ciruit located and what do they mean by bank 1 open

I don't have one on my 91, but my Mazda has one mounted in the valve cover on the front side of the engine. Since it monitors the position of the cam shaft, it has to be somewhere in that area. Check around the cam timing belt sprocket. Open means that it isn't getting a signal. Either it's unplugged or the wire got cut.
