DIY A540 tranny rebuild, anyone done it?

Lookin for a tranny expert..........1991 Camry auto tranny, is it one that the home mechanic can replace basic parts in, including clutch packs? (without having to buy a herd of special tools for it)

I won't be much help, but I've got a '90 with an almost worn out A540 and I want to know what's so secret about the A540 costing $1k or more when the A140 costs around 500.00 bucks? There are so few discussions about the A540 and A540E that you wonder if anybody ever bought a camry or lexus with a V6...

I have found some troubleshooting guidelines on the trans, but it's useless except for diagnosing problems with the trans brain box and associated solenoids and electrical parts.

It's almost like I'm the only one who has ever had a bad or worn out A540.... Mine won't hardly move until it's revved around 2000rpm, but then it drives ok; from past experience I would think it was a bad pump, but worn out clutches, seals and bands could do it to. It's not the torque converter, either; it stall tests fine.

When I was younger, I would've attempted to tear it apart and try to wing it, but at the expense of over 1000 bucks, and it's my wife's car, I'd rather find a little more info on th DIY side too.

so come on people... :naughty: there's someone out there who has the answers How do we do it ourselves? What's so special about this trans?
