i am also curious. as eventually i would like to swap both. but wouldnt it be a bit much for doing in the garage

ring and pinion swaps are pretty straight forward. remove the pinion shaft, push the axles in, take off the C-clips and pull the axles out. you dont have to take the wheels off to get the axles out, but it might make it a little easier. take out the carrier mains and pull the carrier out. to get the pinion out, take off the u-joint carrier and then drive the pinion out with block of wood and a hammer or something. take the ring gear off the carrier and put the new one on. the bolts that hold the ring gear on are left hand thread, just incase the instructions dont tell ya that. the pinion depth should be etched on the face of the pinion and you adjust that with an in depth micrometer or a slide micrometer, and you adjust that by using shims. then adjust the clearance between the ring and pinion.

see thats the only thing i think that im gona have trouble with, the pinion depth, i dunno what a depth micrometer even looks like and how it works, and what is pinion depth

as your looking into the housing, the pinion depth is the distance from the face of the pinion to the centerline of the axles. an in depth micrometer looks like an inside micrometer, like what you might use to measure the bores on an engine, except it's usually got a dial indicator. a slide micrometer works just as well. you could probly rent either one from a parts store.

ridge_runner
04-04-2004, 11:16 PM
i kno quite a few people that use 4.10s in the 1/4 mile tho and people that use them for driving on the street, alot of s10s and blazers came with 4.10s

Chevyracincamaro
04-04-2004, 11:16 PM

yeah the job is pretty easy, i did my first one in three hours, but i was definately working slowly cuz it was a customer car that i didnt want to screw up. and i didnt have to reset the shims or clearance anything cuz all i was replacing were the bearings. i recomend finding someone near by with experience to at least hang out and drink a beer while you do it, its not a hard job, but its nice to have someone around to doubble check shit with ya know? also, your gonna need a hydrolic press to take off, and put on the pinion bearing. also invest in a bearing spacer setup kit, jegs sells one, its bearings that are easy to slide on and off the pinion, so you can save time checking your spacing, without having to press the bearing on and off and on and off and shit. but take your time, and recheck everything three times at least as you go along, and expect to have to pull it back apart after you put it all together the first time. and youll probly do fine.

yea it doesnt seem that hard, ive had people around here telling me its hard and to take it somewhere and i dont wanna do that, someone said i could get done for 200 bucks, fu*k that, i dont really no anyone who has done a rear b4, well i do but i dont trust this guy cause he messed up my firing order one time and wondered y the car wouldnt run... i do have a friend that can help, hes helped me with alot of shit on this car, i help him with his s10 so he helps me with my camaro, those bearing spacers sound useful, and i have a local base hobby shop with a press :sunglasse anything to save me some money... i need every :2cents: that i can get

sounds like a plan id also hit up the websearches to find a step by step description of a rear end swap, im sure any company that specializes in rear gears could help ya out with that.

jus went out to the garage and pull out the diff. piece of cake, what kind of bearings should i go with? whats a good high quility bearing, someone said i should jus reuse my old ones.... i dunno

4onFloor
04-05-2004, 09:54 PM
what shape are your old bearings in? if they are well lubricated and not too dark in color you could probly re-use them. although i cant imagine that they cost too much, probly not too much more than an ordinary wheel bearing. any name brand bearing will do just fine, i like federal mogul, borg/warner and a few others.

ok i have a series f*cking problem, got the other diff out of my other 10 bolt, now the 10 bolt on the, the fucking pinion shaft lock bolt fucking broke!!!! the head along with about 1/4 of an inch came out with it, tried drilling and beating the fuck out of it, nothing is working, i started gettin really frustrated so i decided to call it a night b4 i fuck anything up, any one ever run into this problem b4?

ridge_runner
04-05-2004, 09:57 PM
the 10 bolt on the car i mean*** i left out the car my bad

89IROC&RS
04-05-2004, 10:00 PM
well, looks like youll have to drill it, and they sell bolt removers, which are reverse threaded, so as you screw them into the remaining part of the bolt, it unscrews from the hole. i think you should do that.

ridge_runner
04-05-2004, 10:04 PM
yea ima hit up the local parts store tom, thanks for the info

04-05-2004, 10:10 PM

ridge_runner
04-06-2004, 01:01 PM
well with a couple of drill bits and a couple of dremel cutting wheels, a few beat up socket extensions and a sledge hammer i got it out, the diff is all fucked up, i didnt have much luck with the bolt remover, thus i got problem 2 the diff will not come out, its like the bearings are stuck in

ridge_runner
04-06-2004, 02:27 PM
nvm... it jus took a little more force....

4onFloor
04-06-2004, 03:26 PM

ridge_runner
04-06-2004, 08:56 PM
haha.. yea well i broke to metal circle thing i think its a spacer... it goes on each side of the diff, and i havent been able to get it at any parts store, and no one has a dial meter or whatever its called... so i dunno how ima do this

04-06-2004, 09:06 PM
lmao, man those are the best projects. get it torn apart, broken peices, standing there covered in grease when it hits you....... damn, ive done it this time. lol, sorry to hear about the hard luck man ;) if it makes you feel any better, ive been putting the edelbrock TES headers in my IROC at work, and ive got a flat forhead now from slamming it into the wall.

ridge_runner
04-06-2004, 09:20 PM
haha.. yea i got a laugh outa that, i didnt break it takin it apart i broke it tryin to put it together.. lol, thats the way it always is for me, i get it apart in one piece its jus not gettin back in that way

Chevyracincamaro

i feel you on the headers install iroc...when i have the money (one of these days) im investing in a lift, cause putting headers in a car that is three inches from your face the entire time is an experience i would like to go without repeating...damn jackstands

89IROC&RS
04-06-2004, 09:35 PM

04-07-2004, 11:49 AM
hey iroc, are you ASE certified or you just kinda learning the trade and gettin paid for it? when i worked at a GM dealership the guys always gave me a hard time, but always got to make fun of em when it came test time. every now and then they had to test for like 3 days straight. that had to suck

89IROC&RS
04-07-2004, 07:48 PM
eh, dont care enough to take the tests, im not doing it for a profession, and wont get a raise for it as an assistant. so its really not worth my time. im gm certified in AC systems, electronics, and computer controls, but those tests are pretty much a joke.

oooo ok i gotcha now, how much would a micrometer run me?

If there happens to be an Autozone in the area, they do free loaner tools with a small deposit on things that you might only use once or twice in your backyard mechanic life. I'm fairly certain a micrometer is one of those tools. If that's not the case, they shouldn't run much more than about $20.

That is helpful information but this thread is over two years old and most of those people don't even post anymore. Don't fret though it happens to a lot of new members, including me a while back.
