engine problems

I love my Amigo, but it's starting to get old. 3 weeks ago the trans went(manual). Lost all gears except 4th. Replaced trans and spent 3 days bleeding hydro clutch. Finally got everything working today. First trip out with it engine starts to buck and check engine light came on. Blinks 5 times then stays on steady. Seems to run ok for awhile then you can feel a loss of power, light blinks 5 times and then seems to run ok again. This happens about every 4 mins. Is it possible that the sensors for the transmission are hooked up wrong? Engine ran perfectly before the trans went. 4X4 Amigo - - - 3.2 V6 with 5 speed trans. Any ideas, I'm burnt! Thanks

I have a 90 with the 2.6 4ZE1 motor and I did a EGR change and that solved my problems. These older Amigos have sooooo many problems with Vacuum leaks it isn't funny.

Thanks for the feedback....I have stripped all the Smog gear from it...Have not had time to ckeck the fuel pressure.... but I will look at the EGR valve again!!! or maybe just block it off!!!!

Your are right....it has mega vacuum lines and potential issues....

I will keep you posted on my problem.......

There are so many valves and relays that depend on the vacuum system that I kept all the smog crap on there and am learning to live with it. I did use a straight pipe from the exhaust to the muffler thus elimanating the zig zag of the system. A straight flow is soooooo much better and sounds better too. Be careful on what you disconnect as alot of the relays rely on the ECM to open and close them. They are a Bych to work on. I found out the hard way that timing is off #4 cylinder not #1. leave it to the Japanese :banghead: to do something like that....LOL...... well good luck finding LKQ parts too. Most of the interior is tha same as the Rodeo. Have funn Rick

The engine in my 1990 Amigo is a 4ZE1 series 159cu.in.(2559cc) 4 cylinder. Last summer when I rebuilt it I was timing it off the #1 cylinder and was coming up 180 degrees off each time. Well I happen to go to a local Isuzu dealer and talked to a mechanic and he told me that the 4ZE1 series motor used in the 1987 up isuzus were timed using the #4 cylinder at TDC. I did this and BINGO runs perfect. I did find one Chilton Book that had an * and it said the 4ZE1 was using #4. if your motor is a KSZ1 series what year size is it?

4 cyl. 2.6 liter, FI, 1989

Success!!!!......looks like a bad EGR valve or leak... NO stumbling or hesitation....

Made a block off plate and tossed the EGR value.....backed off 2 deg. on the timing....no pinging....Runs great....lots of power...

Check engine light goes on and off ....but who cares!!!!!
