need to replace water pump, want to do it myself

i've got a 92 passat GL, and i need to put in a new water pump. i want to save myself the $250 and do the labour at home, but i don't know if that'll be possible. i can get the front end up on safety stands, but i don't know if i'll need to get it all the way up on a hoist or what i'll end up having to do. can anyone give me any instructions?

more info about my car if it'll help at all: it's an automatic, 16V, 1.8L
