just installed Tri-Ax

just installed my Tri-Ax short shifter with a friend. Went a lot less smooth then i thought it would. Freak'n Ford. Those of you who have installed any short shifter know that when you are about to take off the stock shifter, it is supposed to sit right in the middle of this open space. Well mine was about 5mm too forward (towards the front of the car) so we didn't have access to the top bolts. So after trying a lot of different things, we had to just take pliers and bend the metal to get access to them. Then put on the new shifter, put everything back.

It does make quite a bit more noise, even when I put bac on the stock rubber shift boot and everything, but I don't mind.
I am not noticing the shift being too much shorter (i put the handle so it is stock height) and it doesn't shift all that much smooter, it is just that now to overcome the clumsy shift I can use power which i couldn't before. I havn't really slammed it through all the gears cuase i want to give it at least 24 hours to get settleled in.

Still a good buy, and excellent quality product.

I can install a short shifter in under an hour did it for a year. The front bolts your talking about just take the right tools and patience no need to bend the metal but bending it is no big deal.

As far as the noise did you remember to put the shifter isolator bushing back in? Also I never have driven a Tri-AX shifter car but I know it is suppose to be medium range as far as throw. If you had gotten a Pro-5.0 there would be no mistaking the shorter throw!

well i don't see what tools you could use under there, you are looking at less than an inch clearance and can't find a wrench of any size down there. Also my bolts were on there damn tight. I did install everything from the stock shifter back on that i would (the ruber boot and all) what i mean by that is teh big rubber tower like thing that you have to strech over the bottom part of the handle, this is not talking about the leather cover that goes over the final deal. The instructions say that you can eliminate some of the noise by doing what i did but i am gussing you can't eliminate all of the noise. They say that since the factory handle has so many rubber isolators in it that helped mask the sound but were also the cuase of the sloppy shifts. I could put the handle down one level and get a shorter throw, and i might try that eventually, but for now, i like teh shifter at the exact hight which i know other short shifters dont get you.


aww crap, just realized i forgot to install one thing. I misunderstood whe they said the shift boot from the stock shifter, i just realized that it is still on teh stock shifter, gotta put that back on now....le dammit.

pro 5.0 was the best shifter I ever used. I just wish I could put one on my rx-7 :(

well the only reason i didn't go with the pro-50 or any of the other ones was that i like how the steeda allows you to have the nearest to stock height handl while still having a short throw, tommorow i am gonna put on the rubber shift boot to eliminate the noise, and i also want to get and set the handle down one to see if i like the even shorter throw

Shift isolator bushing is the rubber bushing the goes where you but the ball of the shifter into the tranny. Without that it will make noise like a motherfucker!!! If that's all done your just being overly sensitive! LoL

no no, i had forgotten that part, and I put it in. It stil makes more noise, but not nearly as much. Also i lowered the handle to the lower setting, much shorter throws now. It is a bit notchy, but from what I have been reading around it takes a while for it to get broken in and gets smoother from there.
