stuck in 4wd

Any suggestions on how i can get my 1990 cherokee beast out of 4wd without big $$ being involved. The drive shifter is in 2wd, but the tran isn't registering that. I've tried reversing for a spell, then fwd, but no go. Any other ideas? The transfer case is good with lubricant.

Double check the linkage under the car. Sometimes it becomes undone. Have some someone move the lever up/down while you check underneath car.

Another thing you might want to check is the axle disconnect. It is on the passenger side of the front axle. It is what locks the righthand axle together when you shift it into 4WD. If it is stuck it will cause the front tires to hop when turning making it seem like it is in 4WD.
