hi i have a 1989 vw jetta GLI 1.8 liter engine. I have owned this car for a little over 2 years and have only had it start 1 time for about an hour i have changed the engine and tranny cause both were shot when i bought the car from a auction. and for the past 2 years i have been dealing with the same problem every time i work on it. its the fuel pumps well it was the fuel pumps like i would buy a fuel pump and connect it and as soon as i turn the key over it shorted out the fuel pumps well after about a year i decided to take a subaru fuel pump and do a direct connection to the batteruy with it and it worked so i went to start the car and it still wouldn't start so i messed around for alittle bit and saw that after i changed the fuel pump all of a sudden it quit puting curent to the spark plugs and so i first changed the ignition coil andstill didnt help then the distributor still nothing then spark plugs and spark plug wires still nothing and then i removed the subaru fuel pump and got another vw jetta fuel pump and put it in then curent quit going to the fuel pump and so now no curent to fuel pump and curent only makes it to ignition coil then thats it!!! i asked my father who has been a mechanic for 30 years and he says to get a new computer and some other stuff. But before i spend anymore money on it i wanna get some more advice from others. if any one could help i would apreciat it alot than you for taking the time and reading my delema any advice would help.

You need to get a Bentley manual and check out the fuel pump wiring schematic (which also is connected to the ignition).
