it will say mpfi on the intake manifold, not the head. it will say mpfi on the hf or si. it will say dpfi on a dx. also check what kind of engine it has, it should either say d15b7, d15b2 or d16a6. also check to see if it has rear disk brakes or sun roof.

acutally they both say PGM-FI. and then in small writing it will say either multi-point or dual-point.

If it doesn't have a rear wiper or front lip, then It's a dx. If the engine says 16 valve and has MPFI + Sunroof, then it's an Si. If it says 8 valve with MPFI + no Sunroof, then it's a HF.

Its a DX because the the HF doesnt have a rear windshield blade? It is dual though =(
I have a big big concern though.
I know nothing about cars ive just admired CRX's since i was 8, its my dream car which is probably sad, but when i drove it i heard a disturbing noise. I am buying this car no matter what, especially since the dealer with the black DX (i assume since it wasnt labeled either) said i didnt call him and offer 2,500 for it (even though it wasnt worth that, there was rust above the gas panel about the size of a golf ball, the rear bumper looks like someone backed into another car at very low speed because it wasnt flush, and there was a quater size hole in the interior door panel) I would have bought this too because i do like CRX's. The dealer was calling me a liar basically, and its a pretty costly lie if it was because i wouldnt have them hold the crx for a day buy giving him 50 dollars till my check. This just pissed me off that i would never consider buying a car from him.
The sound happends in first gear and i think a little into 2nd gear if i remember correctly.
The sound is like umm a scrapping noise. Not metal on metal, but i would say pencil sharpner? the cheap kind that u twist with your hand. It reminded me of like the metal blade in the distributor cab scrapping against the plastic (its what came into my mind when i first noticed it). I dont know if its because the car has HUGE miles on it (190,000 =( ) or what. The lady who owned it came from a family of car salesmen and she seemed to know enough about cars she too loved crx's, only reason she was selling it is because she was preggy and couldnt fit under her CRX now (i assume she either knew basic things or knew nothing, because she couldnt even answer the DX or HF question).
Anyways the body is clean unlike the black 1. Im just worried about the sound. Any ideas? Im still extremly excited to have a car again (2 weeks on a bus to goto college sucked) and it being a CRX is just a huge plus.

that noise might be the tranny.mine does the same thing.its not really a big deal,i mean its not like the tranny is goin to fall out.i have a friend with a 91 dx hatch and its a 4 speed and makes the same damn noise.try and push the clutch as the car is parked and see if the noise goes away.if it does its jus like mine.i got a hf and for everybodys info hf's have a rear wiper and they are 16v per cylinder.the 90-91 have the dpfi.what year is the crx.i think if it has ac than its a dx.

If you don't wanna get into looking at valvecovers, and such, here is a better list to look for.
If it's an Si, it will have rear disc brakes (90-91)
If has a moonroof it's an Si.
If the wheels are factory, and are alloy, it's an Si.
If the redline is 5500 it's an HF
Si, and HF have badges, DX doesnt.
Anything else is a DX

I have an HF and it has a sunroof(appears aftermarket) and has no badges. Engines can be swapped, stickers and badges can come off...check the vin and engine #'s if you want to absolutely sure.

If it doesn't have a rear wiper or front lip, then It's a dx.
dx's DO have a rear wiper. HF's don't.
also, that noise in the tranny isn't that big of a deal, I'm pretty sure it's just a really worn down clutch. My friend ray had the same problem till he swapped engines.
