My '97 over a period of time is just not as peppy as it used to be. I just figured that it was getting old. But then I read the list of scheduled maintenance items for my car, I realized that the PCV valve and Fuel Filter had never been changed. They are supposed to be changed (not checked) every 60K miles.
Directly afterwards, the idle dropped down a little. I noticed that at 60mph the rpm were lower, and there wasn't a dramatic gear shift when I engaged the OD. More importantly, the exposive power the car had when I first bought the car was back. You know, the punch that car give when you drop the pedal at 25mph. heck it scared me when it took off because it wasn't expected and I almost rear-ended someone.
Both are cheap parts, together about $20. Both parts are accessible from the top of the engine. So if you just bought an older max or your max is 120k+, it will be worth your while to replace them.
