well this is my first time posting in this street bike forum. i just bought mu first bike for $300 bucks from a friend. the bike is a 1981 yamaha seca 750cc. my first time riding was on tursday. this past sunday i was riding and the back tire poped. lucky me i was going slow. now i have to replace the tire. is it really hard to take off the rear tire? now i was wondering what is a good newer bike to start off with???

Keep the Seca!!! ;) Only b/c I have a 1994 Seca II. You're best off to go to a shop and get them to replace the tire for you. You can save yourself a few bucks usually by taking the wheel off the bike first and then just having them mount the tire on the wheel instead of them taking everything off themselves. A friend of mine also has a 1981 Seca, but his is the turbocharged version.
As for a good newer bike, if you wanted to look, find some early 90's 250cc-600cc bikes.

does anybody know what kind of motor oil i put in this cycle. it has 37 thousands miles on it. right now im having some problems with it. when i start it, then when i change to 1st gear the bike turns off. i think i do everything right. i hold the clutch and step on to 1st gear, than it turns off as soon as it goes into 1st gear. i dont know what it is?
help please!!!!
oh yeah and what model is the bike? thanks

On most Japanese bikes, there is a safety device that prevents you from riding off when the kick stand is down. There is usualy a switch near the kick stand pivot that the kickstand will hit when it goes up. I dont know exactly what is wrong, but I would check the safety switch.

Yeah while a lot of bikes have the kickstand kill switch I dont think yours does. Have you checked your idle speed? That can play a role. Other than those I cant really think of much but dont worry it shouldnt be anything major.

damit i think it was the kick stand. i tried to put it in gear with the kick stand down. hopefuly my bike doesnt have it. i already took the bike a shop to fix the flat in the back, and i told them what was going on with the bike and yeah they told me it was the safety swtich went out.
now im mad there prolly gonna charge for the swtich to replace :banghead:
oh yeah and what oil should i put in this bike? thanks

You could go to a bike shop and get Yamilube, which is Yammi's own motorcycle oil. Another option is to get Amsoil's 4-stroke motorcycle oil. Either way, make sure you get a new filter (kinda a "duh" but some people forget). The interval on the yamilube will be less because IIRC it's dino oil, where as Amsoil is a true synthetic.

Yamalube is a silly waste of money. Anyone who buys yamalube is just getting sucked in by what the manual says. For the same price you can get one of the best oils around IMO. Mobil 1 15w50 (red cap). Its the same price as the yamalube and its full synth. I have noticed smoother shifting which is a GOOD thing if you have a yamaha. No clutch problems. I love it and use it on everything I own. Amsoil is good but not worth the money. MADE FOR MOTORCYCLE oil is a joke. Save your doe and get the Mobil 1. Everyone I know uses it and NEVER had any problems. Simple as that.

If Amsoil is such a waste, why are they allowed to advertise as being the best on the ballbearing wear test? If it was false, wouldn't someone call them on it? Mobil1 is a true synthetic, yes, but Amsoil still tested better.

Well any oil company can have comparisons and claim to have the best but I only go by personal opinions. And in my opinion Amsoil is a waste of money. And I did not say the oil is crap, I think its decent but not worth the extra doe. Mobil 1 1550 is the best bang for the buck IMO. Buy what you want but I will say that yamalube is no better than a cheap walmart brand oil.

My r1 gets Valvoline VR1 Racing synthetic 20w-50
My vulcan gets Valvoline Synpower 10w-30
I am pretty consistent at doing oil changes about every 1500-1750 miles, I keep logs of mileage and dates, it really helps. I do have a concern though, there are reports of people who use full synthetic on their R1 and start getting clutch slippage, however I am just gonna go out on a limb and presume that they suck at riding or neglect their bike (don't need to bring up yamahas shitty slush box of a clutch basket).

I've heard of that, but only on certain types of bikes, etc. I can't recall specifically at the moment... too much math research.

It should be right up front behind the header pipes... at least that's where both of my bikes were.

Yeah it has to be near your oil pan so check around the area.
