resin casting

before i go spending lots of money on stuff, i wanted to know how much intrest resin replacement parts and aftermarket parts whould strike.
a few small things i was thinking of where to cast the dish from ashomia 19 inch and 18 inch wheels so they can be attached to other rims, i know i have wasted alot of ashomia 19's just for the dish because the dish fit onto tamiyas 18's so nice, i have also noticed several members here using ashomia 19inch rims dish's on there skyline rims. whould this item be something anyone whould be interested in? i think i whould sell them in large quanitys like 5 sets for $5? i whould cast intire rims but i think thats illegal, right? and replacement parts as amt and another company dont supply replacment parts for there kits. also i have had several custom hoods made that i could cast as soon as the artist whom made them gives the ok. can you give me some more legal ideas? thank you.

Robert.

i have done this......

ok it is not simple. my grandpa has this dentist stuff, that they make molds of your teeth. (i am sure there are other things like ti avalible) but we poured that and stuck a bumper in it. then made a bondo replica as a test, but instead you can use resin and pour a thin layer in

it is a basic of make a mold, and pour in resin

i sure someone here will fill you in with more info, i am not all that experinced with resin molds....

I am sure if you were to alter the rim in 1 small way, thAt is diffrent from the one you cast, like make a smaller lip it would be legal, plus if you did make full casts, the chance of getting caught it pretty low unless you advertise ILLEGAL CAST WHEELS or something

Yes if you check the How To I spent a considerable amount of time writing a two part on resin casting. And with the proper materials it is quite easy

Now back to what JDM was really asking. I think you have a great idea there. I don't as a rule build the same stuff most of you guys do , but I do make wheel backs and so on from swap meet parts for my own use.
Before I dove into this I would check on the copywright laws to see what is needed to do this in a legal fashion.

I don't think is a new idea. I'm sure several members have already thought of it, if not done it. I actually have molds of 19's and 18's in small dish, big dish, and beleveled dish. I've only used them for my projects (though none of these actually make to the finished cars :screwy: ). I thought about selling them, but my laziness would get in the way. I don't see how the replicating the dish would be illegal. It's a 1mm thick ring that's 5mm deep. Far too basic a shape for a copyright.

Sorry but if its part of a copyrighted kit then its copyrighted no matter how simple or small.

Question. So if say a toy company made the same size ring-shape in plastic say for costume rings for a doll collection, then Aoshima could sue them for infringing on their copyright because the same size shape was used in there wheels? Or maybe a company that made plastic washers of the same shape and size?

Man thats a whole different story. What we are talking about here is taking a piece af a copyrighted kit and casting duplicates of it and offering them for sale, now if he machines his own to the same specs thats different

i will definitly check into copyright laws and what not. i have read the tutorial by you dag and it is so very helpfull, in fact thats the kit i am buying. i will be casting entire rims but they wont even be close to looking like an ashomia rim, in fact they will be on-off designs i may pay the money to have one wheel machined at a local shop and then cast off of that. or i may do all the work with bits of styrene and putty. and indent a made up logo into them. i will be starting on a rim today and i should have it done by the time i recive the kit to cast them. i will give the first set of wheels to one of the moderators on here like tonioseven or someone i can trust to give a good reviwe on the product with quality pictures. thank you guys for all your help.

Robert, one thing/issue you might want to look into if you're going to make wheels is tires. I came across this problem in my wheel making ideas, but never found a good, inexpensive way to make semi-realistic tires. You could use tires sets like from Pegasus, but that limits your wheel sizes. Anyone out there have any ideas on this?

You could machine one on a lathe out of plastic or aluminum and then cast that, engraving treads would be a real chore.
There are also resins available that are soft and rubber like so a guy could cast somethng farily realistic.
Damn all this talk about casting makes me want to do some more, have to order some RTV though as I used he lsat of what I had on the How To
